Narrative

Cape Fear Community College is a public, two-year educational institution operating under the control of a local Board of Trustees. The institution was originally established as the Wilmington Industrial Education Center on April 3, 1958. On June 4, 1964 the institution was chartered (Charter Document) as Cape Fear Technical Institute by authority of the State of North Carolina under the terms and provisions of the North Carolina General Statutes (NCGS) as a public institution of the North Carolina Community College System (NCGS 115D-1 Statement of Purpose), (NCGS 115D-4 Establishment of Institutions). Furthermore, the North Carolina General Assembly grants authority to the State Board of Community Colleges “to regulate the awarding of degrees, diplomas, and certificates” (Administration of Institutions). The North Carolina Administrative Code spells out the process (Curriculum Program Approvals) by which the State Board of Community Colleges grants approval to member institutions to issue degrees, diplomas, and certificates in specific curriculum programs.
