Comprehensive Standards 3.4.5

The institution publishes academic policies that adhere to principles of good educational practice. These are disseminated to students, faculty, and other interested parties through publications that accurately represent the programs and services of the institution. (Educational Programs Standards for All Educational Programs) (Includes all on-campus, off-campus, and distance learning programs)

Cape Fear Community College (CFCC) demonstrates compliance with this comprehensive standard. The CFCC Catalog and Student Handbook contains academic policies that are approved by the CFCC Board of Trustees. This free publication is provided to anyone with admission, program, or general information inquires and is also available on the CFCC website. The College’s Schedule of Classes also contains information concerning admissions, registration, payment/refund of tuition and fees, financial aid, and graduation. Each semester, the schedule is mailed to all New Hanover and Pender County residents and is also available in the Office of Admissions and Records. Prior to each semester, CFCC offers an orientation program both on campus and online. CFCC has provided information from the CFCC Catalog and Student Handbook and the Schedule of Classes for support.

CFCC uses a variety of committees to provide checks and balances when reviewing curriculum and College policies. CFCC has provided samples of meeting minutes to support its curriculum and policy change practices.

Academic policies approved by the Board of Trustees of Cape Fear Community College appear in the CFCC Catalog and Student Handbook (Academic Information pg 14).

The CFCC Catalog and Student Handbook is provided free of charge to inquiries regarding admission, specific curriculum programs, or general interest in the college. Students, staff, faculty, and the general public may access the CFCC Catalog and Student Handbook on the CFCC website (College Catalog).

The Schedule of Classes publication contains academic policy information regarding admissions, registration, payment and refund of tuition and fees, financial aid, and graduation (Schedule of Classes pg 3). The Schedule of Classes is mailed to all residents of New Hanover and Pender Counties each semester. It is also available in the Office of Admissions and Records and on the College website.

The Student Development Division offers an orientation program prior to the start of each academic semester to acquaint new students with the College, its academic policies, programs, facilities, resources, services, activities, and organizations. The College also offers an online orientation for Distance Learning students and others who are unable to attend the program in person (Orientation On-Line).

To ensure the yearly CFCC Catalog and Student Handbook accurately represents the programs offered by Cape Fear Community College, technical curriculum programs are reviewed each year by Advisory Committees. The purpose of each Advisory Committee is to discuss technology changes and trends occurring in industry that will affect the curriculum (April 27, 2004 Committee Minutes). Program changes recommended by the Technical Advisory Committee are presented to the Curriculum Committee for consideration and approval (October 6, 2004 Curriculum Committee Minutes). The purpose of the Curriculum Committee is to make recommendations for administrative consideration of 1) changes in curriculum course titles and course descriptions; 2) addition or deletion of courses; and 3) addition or deletion of a curriculum. Recommendations endorsed at the local level are then submitted to the North Carolina Community College System office for final approval.

To ensure the college is adhering to good educational practice, policy changes recommended by the Student Development Committee (December 8, 2004 Student Development Committee Minutes) are brought to College Council for approval. Following College Council approval (January 26, 2005 College Council Minutes), policy changes are presented to Board of Trustees for adoption (March 24, 2005 Board of Trustees Minutes pg 4).
