CFCC's Wireless Info Pages

History and Future of SurfCFCC

Until now, students have needed to be in computer labs, the Learning Lab, or the LRC to access the internet. SurfCFCC was created to give students the ability to access the internet from more locations to enhance their educational experience.  Locations where the internet may be reached ("hot-spots"), were placed on both campuses where students congregate.  These "hot-spots” are located in areas selected by students on a survey taken the Spring of '06.

We tried to make SurfCFCC much like the experience you would have if you logged in at a coffee house or airport.  This model is one with which many are already familiar, and we hope for the same simplicity and ease of use.   The only difference is that because this resource is only for the students, faculty, and staff of CFCC, you must login before using it.

In the last week of classes for Spring Semester '06, approximately 20 wireless computer-toting students "beta-tested" the SurfCFCC wireless network.  A few bugs were discovered and were quickly swatted thanks to their efforts.  Starting in July, the network is available to the general CFCC population to provide even more feedback for the official roll-out scheduled for Fall '06.

So, what does the future of SurfCFCC hold?  We will definitely be asking where you would like more hot-spots located.  We'll also be listening to your comments about the speed and convenience of using SurfCFCC.  This is a new service offered at CFCC, and I'm sure there will be plenty of opportunities for change and enhancements.  There are exciting days ahead.
