Steps to Transferring to a Four-Year College
Plan & Choose a Field of Study
- Choose a major as soon as possible as most four-year colleges and universities have prerequisites or requirements that should be completed during your first two years at CFCC. If you are not sure of a major, meet with a career counselor in the Testing/Career Counseling Center.
- Explore the opportunities of taking classes that you find interesting and to find out what areas or specialties are of interest to you.
- Once you have found an area of study, meet with an advisor and plan your course of action or class schedule. You may access these websites to find out information about majors: UNCW Career Services or NC Careers
Research the College or University That You Would Like to Attend: Cost, Area and Location, Student Population, and Fields of Study.
- Use the Internet to explore transfer information
- Take advantage of college/university representatives who visit CFCC annually
- Tour the college/university that interests you
- Most importantly, keep in touch with your personal the CFCC advisor
- Talk to a college or university counselor about program requirements, especially if you have transfer credits from other academic institutions
Application Procedure
- Submit an application on time to each senior institution of your choice. (Institutions usually allow students to submit their applications on line).
- Submit an application fee if applicable.
- Track your transcripts and find out what the processing time for transcripts is
- Supply colleges with the required letters of recommendation and give ample of time to instructors and other contacts to have your letters ready if you need them
- Generally, a personal statement or essay is required by the admitting college. Plan to spend a great deal of time composing the essay; this is where you will tell the Admissions Office who you are and why the institution should admit you.
- When a senior institution requests documentation from the Dean of Students, this person's title is equivalent to CFCC's Vice President of Student Development (Room A 220).
