Painting I Students Bring “We Are One” Mural to the International School at Gregory

Cape Fear Community College Painting I students completed a public art project at the International School at Gregory with the help of the school and the North Carolina Museum of Art (NCMA).

After participating in a workshop led by NCMA resident artist Peter Marin on the history of Mexican mural making, the students designed a mural at the International School at Gregory that sheds light on global learning and migration.

With a template of a butterfly by Cornelio Campos provided by the NCMA, the students composed a mural of a butterfly and the earth, using the butterfly to symbolize migration and the earth to portray global learning. The mural displays the name of the school written in English, Spanish, and Mandarin alongside the words “We Are One.”

All are encouraged to share photographs in front of the large-scale composition using the hashtag #ArtNaturePeople.

Shared images will be reposted to the NCMA website as well as the College’s social media sites.

CFCC students felt pride when hearing the positive reactions from the Gregory school community as well as a sense of satisfaction and accomplishment when standing back and looking at what they helped to create. One student commented, “Someday I can bring my children here to see this.”
