The building will include studio space for visual arts students, practice rooms for student musicians, and rehearsal space for drama students. The center will include a 1,500-seat performing arts auditorium, which will be used for college productions and events along with events and performances for the general public.

The project is the first building funded by the $164 million bond referendum passed by New Hanover County voters in November 2008. The local bond funds are being spent locally to provide more job training opportunities for the local community.

Located at the corner of Front and Red Cross streets, the building will enable CFCC to better serve local citizens by providing more classrooms for general college classes, expanded health care training labs, and a student services center.

Located at the corner of Front and Red Cross streets, the building will enable CFCC to better serve local citizens by providing more classrooms for general college classes, expanded health care training labs, and a student services center. The project also includes plans to renovate the area around Union Station to create an attractive and functional environment that will benefit students, employees, visitors and the general public.

The building is currently being designed by LS3P Architects in Wilmington and is slated to open in 2012.

Basic Specifications:

  • Location: Corner of Front and Red Cross streets
  • Size:  230,000 square feet
  • Height 6 stories
  • Estimated cost: $57.9 million (building); $20 million (parking structure)

Architectural Style:

The architecture of Union Station will reflect historic style of former Atlantic Coast Line passenger station, which once sat on the same site.

Remembering the Railroad: The heritage of the Atlantic Coast Line Railroad will be remembered throughout the site of CFCC's new Union Station Building. The former Atlantic Coast Line Railroad passenger station (at left) once sat on the now vacant site of Union Station (at right). In addition to the overall architecture of the building, the railroad will be remembered with several historical markers and a renovated coach carpenter's shop, located behind Union Station.

  • Overgrown railbed to be converted into new green space with pedestrian park and outdoor amphitheater
  • Renovated coach carpenter’s shop to serve as static historical display
  • Safer pedestrian access from student parking areas to classroom facilities
  • More on-campus parking for students to alleviate over-crowded parking lots

A portion of the chain link fence on Red Cross St. will be open to guests to access the site. Look for the large blue and white tent.

Please note: Wear appropriate shoes. High heels might be tricky in the sand.

This new facility will replace the aging Cosmetology building downtown and provide expanded class space  and a new home for the award winning Cosmetology department.

In addition to the Cosmetology department the new building will also house class space for the Wilmington Early College High School program.
