Verizon Wireless has established a $2,000 scholarship at Cape Fear Community College for a victim of domestic violence. The scholarship will pay full tuition and cover the expense of books and related fees for an individual referred by Wilmington’s Domestic Violence Shelter and Services. Presented earlier this month to the Cape Fear Community College Foundation, the scholarship will be awarded in time for the Fall, 2010, semester. Verizon Wireless is a recognized corporate leader for its commitment to preventing domestic violence and raising awareness of the issue. Locally, Verizon Wireless supports a number of organizations that serve victims and the cause of domestic violence.
Mary Anne Lama, executive director of Domestic Violence Shelter and Services commented, “We are grateful for Verizon’s partnership and continued commitment to this important issue. Their support with this scholarship reinforces our mission to empower victims and encourage their independence and self reliance.”
Verizon Wireless is establishing a similar scholarship at Charlotte’s Central Piedmont Community College. The scholarships are part of the company’s nationwide Hopeline program through which unused wireless phones, batteries and accessories are collected, refurbished and sold for reuse. Proceeds from these sales are used to provide wireless phones and cash grants to local shelters and non-profit organizations that focus on domestic violence prevention and awareness.
