The check represented the collective donations of more than five hundred CFCC employees who donated during the college’s annual employee fund drive in September, which focused on a theme of “raising hopes and fulfilling dreams” for CFCC students. The funds collected will be used to provide scholarships and support initiatives for students, such as departmental grants for innovative academic programs. Over 75% of the college’s full-time employees have already contributed to the fund, and donations will continue throughout the year.

Despite challenging economy, Wilmington community continues to support CFCC students

Wilmington, NC – The Cape Fear Community College (CFCC) Foundation announced today that as of June 30, the close of the state’s fiscal year, the organization had raised over $1.3 million for student scholarships and academic program support.

“I am thrilled to say that we surpassed our fundraising goal of $1.2 million which was set by our Board of Directors at the beginning of the 2011-12 budget year,” said Margaret Robison, executive director of the CFCC Foundation.

Robison is quick to point out this accomplishment is a group effort. “First, we must thank our dedicated board members for continually expanding CFCC’s network of support in the community and for their personal commitment to bettering the futures of our students,” said Robison. “We must also thank the generous employees of CFCC who exemplify quality education in their daily work and internally set the example of supporting students with an amazing 80 percent giving rate.”

In an academic year that has been marked locally with double-digit unemployment, above-average gas prices and lagging home sales, CFCC enrollment remained strong as many residents returned to classes with the hope of increasing their employment prospects.

And despite the challenging economy, the Wilmington community has continued to show support for college education. “We are touched by the ongoing efforts of individuals, corporations, foundations and civic organizations who continue to invest in our students,” said Robison. “Their financial support is a direct testament to their belief that community college education and work force training are essential to the success of our local economy.”

Nearly 30,000 students enroll at Cape Fear Community College each year in over 78 curriculum and continuing education programs. More than two-thirds of CFCC students require some kind of financial assistance to complete their academic programs; however, 98% of curriculum students report that they are employed or continuing their education at a higher level within a year of graduation. One out of every seven residents of New Hanover and Pender counties has taken a class at CFCC in the past year.

——————

Wilmington, NC –SunTrust Bank recently donated $2,500 to support scholarships for students enrolled in business programs at CFCC.

As Cape Fear Community College’s student population continues to grow, there is an escalating need for financial assistance. Scholarships help many students to realize their educational goals.

“Scholarships for students in our business programs are greatly needed,” said Melissa Watson, CFCC Business Department Chair. “Many of our students are returning to college after having been in the work force for a number of years. They rely heavily on financial aid, which is sometimes just not enough to cover tuition, books, and fees. For these students, many times, receiving a scholarship means the difference between dropping out of school or finishing and graduating.”

“At SunTrust, we know there are few factors more essential to our physical and mental well-being than the quality of life in the communities in which we live,” said Sandy L. Spiers, SunTrust City President. “We believe that supporting education – along with the arts, health, and human services — is essential to the improvement of that quality of life.”

“SunTrust has a valuable partner in Cape Fear Community College,” Spiers said. “CFCC has a reputation for making higher education accessible to all, each year preparing more students with the education and training they need for meaningful and rewarding employment. Those students become a state-of-the-art workforce, driving economic growth throughout our region. In this way, CFCC serves not just their students, but their entire community every day. SunTrust is committed to making our communities healthy, economically vital, and ready to tackle the future… which is why SunTrust is proud to support Cape Fear Community College.”

Merit-based scholarships from this donation will be awarded to students in one of CFCC’s Business Programs or to students with a pre-major in Business Administration, Accounting, Finance, or Marketing who plan to transfer to a four-year institution upon completion of the Associates of Arts degree at CFCC.

The Cape Fear Community College Foundation exists solely to support the students, teachers, programs and mission of the College. The Foundation secures and manages gifts and grants, including cash contributions, deferred gifts, securities, donated services, and equipment and supplies for educational purposes. For more information about CFCC, The CFCC Foundation or scholarship opportunities, please contact the Cape Fear Community College Foundation at 910.362.7207.

Wilmington, NC – In a continued effort to support Cape Fear Community College and its goal to meet the health care training needs of New Hanover County and surrounding areas, Cape Fear Memorial Foundation recently donated $50,000 to the Cape Fear Community College Foundation.

The money is earmarked for an equipment buy, which will significantly enhance the educational experience of CFCC radiography students by exposing them to a full range of equipment used in the field.

“We are very fortunate to have this grant. This technology is state of the art for the field,” said Donna Collentine, Radiography Program Director. “Radiography students will have access to direct digital radiography (DR), the newest method of image processing. We will also be upgrading some of the monitors in the lab to larger screens for image display.”

The addition of this equipment to the current radiography lab will allow students to learn the technology which they will continue to use in their careers, and as a result, make CFCC graduates more marketable to potential employers.

A special thanks also goes out to Bojangles’ Famous Chicken ‘n Biscuits who donated the catering for the event, allowing the Foundation to award an additional 30 student scholarships. Bojangles’ president and CEO Randy Kibler also served as the keynote speaker.

——————

The mission of the CFCC Foundation is to raise scholarship dollars for CFCC students. 100% of the money raised at the luncheon goes directly to student assistance. We are asking each attendee to please consider a minimum donation of $100.00 to fund these much-needed scholarships. Of course, many of our donors give significantly more, and donations of any size are greatly appreciated.

Wilmington, NC – The Cape Fear Community College (CFCC) Foundation recently received a $5,500 grant from the Bank of America Charitable Foundation to help boost local student employability. Funding from the grant will be used to assist students who are enrolled in Business Technology programs and in Career Readiness Certificate (CRC) programs by covering a portion of the cost of various certification exams for students who are unable to pay the entire amount. The grant will increase the employability of 141 – 191 students by giving them a marketable edge in the current job market.

“As an employer and as a leading financial services institution, we have a vested interest in supporting educational initiatives that will produce a knowledgeable and skilled workforce,” said Tom Dodson, Wilmington area market president for Bank of America. “We are pleased to support Cape Fear Community College and their efforts to impact and improve the educational experience of their students.”

Students in CFCC’s Business Technology programs have the option of taking computer-related certifications that increase their employability along with their degrees. “These industry certifications demonstrate to potential employers that students have expert knowledge in the use of Microsoft Office applications, computer and network security, and computer hardware and software configurations,” said Melissa Watson, Department Chair, Business Technologies. “The certifications also give student a marketable edge that demonstrates increased determination, drive, competence and capacity for increased productivity.”

Career Readiness Certification (CRC) assessments are given to individuals who are enrolled in the Job Seekers and Career Advancement Lab offered by the CFCC Continuing Education department. The lab is part of CFCC’s Human Resources Development (HRD) program, a state-funded program that allows students to take designated fee-waived courses to enhance job acquisition and retention skills.
