received a BA in English and an MFA in Creative Writing (Poetry) from UNC-Wilmington. I also have a Certificate from ECU in Multicultural and Transnational Literature. I have taught at Cape Fear for one semester; however, I have been teaching in the community college system for seven years.

I enjoy teaching Expository Writing as I can bring my own passion for writing and reading into the classroom, but I also love teaching literature and creative writing courses. My teaching philosophy is to make the classroom dynamic, engaging, and relevant to students’ lives outside of school. I believe that critical thinking is essential in academia and in life, so I urge students to consider and reflect on literature as it is connected to the outside world and to their own personal lives. Teaching and learning are two of my lifelong passions and I enjoy inspiring students in the classroom to appreciate learning and to think “outside of the box.”

The community college experience is valuable because students have the opportunity to interact with other students from various ages, backgrounds, and levels of experience with regard to academia and in the workforce. This diversity makes the classroom even more dynamic and engaging.

My poetry has been published in a number of literary journals including: The Asheville Poetry Review, Flint Hills Review, Coal City Review, California Quarterly, and Main Street Rag. When I am not teaching or grading papers, I enjoy writing/fiddling with poems and fiction, reading, and spending time with family.
