James Walker Nurses Alumnae Give Back to Cape Fear Community College

Wilmington, NC- Lillian Newton, President of the James Walker Alumnae Nurses Association and Principal Manager of the James Walker Scholarship Fund, presented $10,000 to the Cape Fear Community College Foundation to establish the James Walker Nurses Alumnae Endowed Scholarship Fund.  The establishment of this endowed scholarship will help deserving nursing students reach their educational goals for years to come through the income gained from the scholarship fund over time.

The James Walker Nurses Alumnae Association was established in 1940 by graduate nurses of James Walker Memorial Hospital. The James Walker Scholarship Fund was established in 1966 by the Board of Managers at James Walker Memorial Hospital to provide scholarships to students in nursing programs throughout the community as well as the state. Since 1968, they have focused their efforts on helping nursing students who are facing hardship situations succeed in school.

“It’s important to train nurses in a professional manner and in the quality of care.” said Newton. “And with the changing of times, the need for nurses is going to be greater.”

Gifts like the James Walker Nurses Alumnae Endowed Scholarship Fund enable students to focus on their studies by relieving financial worries. CFCC’s health care programs have established an outstanding reputation among the local health care community by achieving a one hundred percent pass rate on their respective certification exams year after year.
