Local Garden Clubs Provide Scholarships to CFCC students

Each year, several local garden clubs generously provide scholarships to support Cape Fear Community College landscape gardening students. Area clubs include Hampstead Garden Club, Cape Fear Rose Society, Hobby Greenhouse Club, and Cape Fear Garden Club.

“Scholarships give students a needed boost of confidence and awareness that someone cares and they’re not alone in their endeavors,” says Mike Jones, lead instructor of Landscape Gardening. “I can think of nothing that has a greater potential return to donor investment than the dollars given to a needy student in the form of scholarship aid.”

Hampstead Garden Club established a scholarship for second-year students with financial need who have at least a 3.0 GPA.  This year they awarded a $2,000 scholarship to Martyn Viger of Takoma Park, Maryland.

Cape Fear Rose Society established a scholarship in 2006. This year Kimberly Heltsley of Hampstead, NC was awarded the $1,000 scholarship for spring and summer 2009.

Each year, Hobby Greenhouse members grow plants for their seasonal greenhouse sales to raise funds to support landscape gardening students with an annual $1,000 scholarship. Brawnell Simms of Wilmington, NC was selected as this year’s recipient.

Cape Fear Garden Club awarded its annual endowed scholarship to Steve Hamel of Wilmington, NC. In addition to the scholarship, the club provides grant funding opportunities for the community from proceeds from their Azalea Festival Garden tour held each year. Currently, a horticulture fitness trail is being completed at the CFCC North Campus that was made possible by a grant from the Cape Fear Garden Club. The trail will encircle the existing two-acre retention pond at the North Campus and will be one-half mile in length. It will include a labeled arboretum of approximately 50 aquatic plants including Venus fly traps, pitcher plants and sundews. CFCC landscape gardening students will be responsible for the maintenance and upkeep of the trail, which will also be shared with the community.
