Coastal Navigation Class Offered at CFCC
Coastal Navigation begins Tuesday January 8. Classes will be held Tuesday evenings and two Monday evenings (Feb. 11 and 18) through Feb. 19, 2013 from 6:00 PM-9:50 PM. Registration cost is $123 payable on the first night of class. (Only a $3 fee for students over age 65.) The class will be held in room S212 on CFCC’s Wilmington campus. Beginning with the basics of chart interpretation, there will be extensive charting exercises using magnetic compass corrections, time/speed/distance calculations, set and drift of the current, running fixes, and referencing nautical publications. Electronic navigation techniques including GPS, radar, depth finding, and the use of new computer software will also be covered. While the course is not geared as an exam prep study, it will still be very useful for students planning to take the US Coast Guard Captain’s license test. Required Materials: One nautical chart (#12221TR) and plotting instruments (dividers and parallel rulers or equivalent). Details will be given on the first night. Printed materials will be provided by the instructor. Supplies are available at the CFCC Bookstore. Call 362-7414 for more information.
