Let the stars be your guide. Take a Celestial Navigation class at CFCC – Beginning January 3rd.

Celestial Navigation will begin January 3rd at 6:00 PM.  The class will meet each Thursday night, and two Wednesday evenings (Feb. 13 and 20) from 6:00 PM – 9:50 PM beginning Jan. 3 and ending Feb. 21, 2013. Registration cost: $123, payable on the first night of class. (Only a $3 fee for students over age 65.) Location: Room S212 on CFCC main campus.  Subject Material: The theory and technique for finding one’s position at sea using sextant observations of heavenly bodies will be presented.  Beginning with a coverage of the movements of the navigational stars, planets, moon, and sun, the course will show how to use a sextant, and then to take the sight information and convert it to a charted position.  The Nautical Almanac and special sight reduction tables are utilized.  At least one field trip to Wrightsville Beach is planned for evening star sights.  Although GPS navigation may be more accurate, celestial navigation remains a dependable alternative and complement to electronics which every truly self-sufficient navigator should know.   Call 362-7414 for more information.
