CFCC students offer free lifestyle design workshops to help seniors stay healthy after retirement

Students at Cape Fear Community College will hold a series of interactive workshops to help senior citizens maintain a healthy lifestyle after retirement.

On Nov. 18 and Nov. 21, students in CFCC’s Occupational Therapy Assisting (OTA) program will offer six different lifestyle design workshops specifically designed to help seniors learn techniques to maintain mental and physical health. The workshops are free and will be held in the Union Station Building at the downtown Wilmington Campus.

According to OTA instuctor Jennifer Renshaw, the purpose of the event is to give students practical experience and provide a valuable community service to the public.

“These workshops will provide students with an opportunity to educate adults in the community about the importance of healthy, safe, and balanced lifestyles for successful living,” Renshaw said.

“As adults transition into retirement and progress into older adulthood, it is important for them to preserve life roles and ensure that all transitions are healthy.  This may include aging in place with home modifications, group education sessions, leisure exploration after the loss of a spouse or family member,  healthy routines, fall prevention, safety in the community, and use of adaptive equipment to live with more independence during the onset or after recovery from health conditions.

“Living and engaging in meaningful occupations through each stage of the lifespan is important for overall health which requires balance in all areas of occupation:  work, rest, sleep, play, education, leisure, activities of daily living, and instrumental activities of daily living. Regardless of your age, having a meaningful purpose in life is the ticket to health and well-being,” Renshaw explained.

Although the workshops will focus on the adult population, from birth through end of life care, occupational therapy practitioners are skilled in providing client centered care that enables individuals with the opportunity to live and engage in meaningful life occupations successfully.

This event is presented by senior occupational therapy assistant students and involves research, development, marketing, and implementation of trending health and wellness groups.   Each 45 minute session has 10 seats available.

The full schedule for the workshops is below:
November 1811:00 a.m. - Half Full:  This group is designed to promote well-being throughout the aging process. Optimistic approaches that allow individuals to live longer and happier lives will be presented. Participants will engage in activities and create a resource that promotes happy and healthy living.

12:00 noon - Brain Games:  As people age, it is important to actively participate in activities that will keep you sharp! Through the use of cognitively stimulating activities, exercise, and “brain games,” we will show you how to enjoy maintaining and strengthening your cognitive abilities!

1:00 p.m. - Home Safe Home:  This group will discuss fall prevention and awareness including adaptations to create a safe home environment.  Participants will leave with knowledge of fall prevention and easy take-home techniques to update and modify the home.November 21

9:00 a.m - Balanced Living:  The purpose of this group is to provide participants with opportunities to explore leisure activities related to health and wellness.  Specific areas of leisure that will be explored include physical activities, arts, and social participation. Community resources for participants to take home will be provided.

10:00 a.m. - Mornings Made Easy:  This group will demonstrate the benefits of using adaptive equipment during a morning routine to minimize movements that sometimes put joints and body structures at risk. Participants will be able to explore adaptive equipment and leave with general knowledge of items available on the market.

11:00 a.m. - Prepared and Aware: Tips for Safe Living-  Being educated and proactive are the first and most effective steps for keeping yourself safe, whether at home, online, or walking to your car.
