Michael McGowan was a well-loved area chef who recently lost his battle with Cystic Fibrosis. The Michael McGowan Endowed Scholarship Fund was established by Michael’s wife, Shelly. The scholarship will be available to students in CFCC’s culinary program.

To date, more than 70% of the funds needed have been raised to establish an endowed scholarship by September 2013. The ultimate goal is to raise at least $20,000 for the endowed scholarship, so that funds will continue to be available to students who share McGowan’s passion for culinary arts.

Cape Fear Community College is pleased to announce that Lewis Stroud is the new Director of Student Services for CFCC’s North Campus.

In his role at CFCC, he is responsible for coordinating admissions, financial aid, counseling, and career and testing services for students at the North Campus in Castle Hayne.

Mr. Stroud comes to CFCC from St. Andrews University in Laurinburg, NC, where he served as Senior Associate Dean of Students.

Stroud received his undergraduate degree from St. Andrews University and a Master’s Degree in Adult Education from Trident University International. Stroud is also a United States Navy veteran. In the Navy, he was an Avionics Technician, and worked on F14 fighter jets.

Stroud says he hopes his experiences will benefit students at CFCC. ”I am excited about working with students and helping them achieve their goals. I know what it’s like to be an adult student, I received my Master’s Degree in 2012. I think students will relate to that.”

Stroud is also excited about CFCC’s growth. ”I’ve arrived at CFCC at a very exciting time. The planned expansion will create many additional opportunities for students in this region.”

CFCC is currently expanding the campus in downtown Wilmington, the North Campus and adding a facility in Surf City.

In the year 2012 the Registrar’s Office sent out over 12,000 curriculum transcripts for Cape Fear Community College students. In January 2012 CFCC started sending transcripts electronically using Scrip-Safe software to other Scrip-Safe receiving colleges. A total of 3,274 transcripts were sent electronically last year, which included 1,128 sent to the University of North Carolina – Wilmington.

Transcripts can be sent electronically to other colleges, mailed out, or picked up by the student the next day. Transcripts can be requested and picked up at both the Main Campus and the North Campus. The cost of an official CFCC transcript is now $5.00 each, up from $2.00 in July 2012. (CFCC does not fax or email transcripts.)

A transcript can be requested on the CFCC website when it is going directly to another college. Otherwise, a letter or form signed by the student is required, along with the $5.00 fee. Occasionally a transcript is sent by Fed Ex for overnight delivery, when it is an urgent matter. That requires an additional $10 fee.

One Cape Fear Community College student will be getting a head start on his career, thanks to a new grant program designed for student veterans who are preparing for jobs in the auto repair industry.

Kevin Young, an U.S. Air Force veteran who is studying collision repair at CFCC, was recently selected to receive $2,500 in tools from the “Hire Our Heroes” grant program sponsored by 3M and the Collision Education Foundation.

Young, who relocated to Wilmington from Chicago, enrolled at CFCC to prepare for a new career in automotive collision repair. Young said that automotive work seemed like a natural choice because something it’s he has been interested in for years and the jobs are in high demand.

According to CFCC’s collision repair lead instructor Shawn Dixon the job market is very strong for trained collision repair technicians.

“The jobs are definitely out there,” Dixon said.

Launched in January of 2013, the “Hire Our Heroes” campaign helps to place veterans in technical jobs that are in need of skilled technicians.

CFCC offers day and night classes in collision repair and refinishing. The college offers a one-year diploma program and a two-semester certificate program. Courses are offered at the downtown Wilmington Campus and in Burgaw.

For more details about 3M’s “Hire Our Heroes” program, see the video here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=XqLYSpaZx2s#!.

Candidates for graduation must file an “Intent to Graduate” form through the CFCC Registrar’s office. At the same time, they are required to complete the Graduating Student Opinion survey. This survey documents the student experience and provides the college with some options for continual improvement.

And although this academic year doesn’t end until summer session ends, we took a peek at some of the data that answers the question about students primary goal in attending CFCC.

As you might expect, the top goals are to receive a 2-year degree, get a head start on a 4-year degree, or receive a diploma or certificate. Just over 12% want to improve their job skills, almost 5½ % want to prepare for a new job, and a small portion just want to learn something new.

Of the students responding, 89% said YES! If they were to begin again they would choose to attend CFCC. Congratulations to the 2013 spring graduates and thank you, faculty and staff for helping them reach their goals.
