CFCC to Host Live Performance About Organ Transplants

October 1st, 2008 by pmlackey44
CFCC to Host Live Performance About Organ Transplants
Show Part of One Book, One Community Project
WILMINGTON - As part of the ”One Book, One Community” series,  Cape Fear Community College will host a Medical Readers’ Theatre performance of “Follow Your Heart” on Monday, October 6, at 3:00 p.m. in L-107. The performance is free and open to the public.

In Medical Readers’ Theatre, performers do not memorize their lines, move much on stage, and do not wear costumes or makeup. In “Follow Your Heart”  they represent the perspective of the donor’s family, the organ recipient, and the transplant physician. The actors sit before the audience and simply read their characters’ parts-it is the audience’s job to imagine the action, just as one would do when listening to a drama on the radio.

“Follow Your Heart” by Richard Selzer is a short story about organ transplantation and resulting concerns about modern medical and scientific ethics. This ties in with the  “One Book, One Community” selection for this year, Never Let Me Go by Kazuo Ishiguro. A novel with science fiction elements, Never Let Me Go explores the medical possibilities of genetic technology and the ethical issues that are consequently raised.

Dr. Todd Savitt from ECU School of Medicine will introduce the program and facilitate the post performance discussion.

Wachovia Foundation Establishes Scholarships for CFCC Business Programs

September 23rd, 2008 by CFCC Public Information Office

WILMINGTON - The Wachovia Foundation donated $2,000 in scholarship funds to Cape Fear Community College for the 2008-2009 academic year. The donation will provide four merit-based scholarships in the amount of $500 to students from low- to moderate-income households enrolled in one of CFCC’s business programs.  With these scholarships, the Wachovia Foundation aims to help CFCC attract bright students who may not, otherwise, enroll or remain in college because of financial struggles. The four scholarships will also help close the widening gap between the number of students in need of scholarship and the number of scholarships available to students enrolled in CFCC’s Business Programs.

Currently, there are 582 students enrolled in Cape Fear Community College’s business programs. With an ever-increasing need for highly skilled professionals in this area, this program is in strong demand.

CFCC helps boost the economy of New Hanover and Pender counties by generating an additional $435 million in business sales and $192 million in labor income. Ninety-nine percent of CFCC graduates reported that they were employed full time one year after graduation. Employer satisfaction with customized training of CFCC graduates is 100 percent. By donating this generous gift, the Wachovia Foundation is not only aiding four business students, but also boosting the local economy.
