Cape Fear Community College in partnership with the Employment Security Commission, JobLink Centers in New Hanover and Pender counties, is offering the Career Readiness Certificate (CRC) program. The CRC is a portable credential recognized by many employers across the State and nationwide that allows a job candidate to prove his/her skills in three areas:

All of this allows employers to make informed employment and training decisions. Higher skills indicate a person's readiness for a greater range of responsibility.
"Over the last 10-15 years there has been a weakening confidence in the academic credentials with which people graduate from high school and college" according to Barbara Bolin, pioneer in the development of the certificate and president of the National Association for Career Credentialing. As jobs in the United States continue to become more complex, employers are asking their employees to have a command of increasingly higher skills. The Career Readiness Certificate, through the ACT WorkKeys system, provides a standardized measurement to compare employees and job applicants with established profiles. Work and College Readiness
If students are going to be adequately prepared for the workforce, they need to understand the requirements of the jobs they are considering. WorkKeys helps students determine the skill levels and education requirements for various jobs. The WorkKeys database contains over 13,000 job profiles outlining the Math, Reading and Locating information and other skill levels utilized in each occupation. After taking the KeyTrain pre-assessments students will know if there are any skills gaps and exactly what areas in which they need to improve when considering specific jobs.
Career Readiness Skill Levels
(Click on each level for a description of the skills assessed.)
- Bronze Level signifies an individual has scored at least a level 3 in each of the three areas (Reading for Information, Applied Mathematics and Locating Information) and has the needed skills for 35% of the jobs in the WorkKeys database.
- Silver Level signifies an individual has scored at least a level 4 in each of the three core areas and has the necessary skills for 65% of the jobs.
- Gold Level signifies an individual has scored at least a level 5 in each of the three core areas and has the necessary skills for 90% of the jobs.
