Substitute teaching can offer opportunities to set you on the path to professional advancement and personal fulfillment. Whether you are looking for a part-time job or are deciding whether or not to become a professional teacher, substitute teaching can be an informative and satisfying experience.

Effective Teacher Training provides substitute teachers with principles and practices of effective teaching. Course topics include: classroom management, factors that affect student learning, education-related issues, lesson planning, and how to teach a lesson. This course, also suitable for new teachers and teacher assistants, will increase your confidence in the classroom and will help you to assist students in reaching their goals.

Requirements for Substitute Teachers

New Hanover and Pender counties have different requirements and expectations for substitute teachers. In addition, each county has their own application and orientation process. If you are not a licensed teacher, Effective Teacher Training (also known as Effective Substitute Training) is a requirement for substitute teachers who are hired in New Hanover County. Upon successful completion of Effective Teacher Training, you will receive a certificate that proves participation and completion of the course, which you will then need to provide to the New Hanover County school system. Effective Teacher Training is not sufficient for employment as a substitute teacher in Pender County, who require substitute teachers to have a teacher’s license or a teaching degree in education. However, this course is recommended if you are interested in learning more about classroom management and/or instructional techniques.
