Aimee Helmus, Director

As the Director, Aimee provides information and assistance to CFCC students, faculty, and staff.  She is responsible for managing, developing, and ensuring that CFCC is in compliance with federal mandates, in order to ensure access to students with disabilities. Aimee became the Director at CFCC in October, 2015.   Prior to coming on-board at CFCC, Aimee served as the Disability Services Coordinator at the University of North Carolina Wilmington for more than 10 years.   She is a certified Special Education Teacher and previously taught in both North Carolina and Virginia public school settings.   Aimee earned her M.Ed. from the University of North Carolina Wilmington.

 

Gwen Morris, Assistant Director

Gwen has served as CFCC’s Assistant Director for more than 15 years and earned her M.Ed. from the University of Georgia.  She is responsible for all aspects of DSS, in the director’s absence.  She provides information and support to students with disabilities who are enrolled at CFCC, as well as information and support to faculty and staff.  She is responsible for ensuring that CFCC is in compliance with Federal mandates with regards to assuring access and accommodating students with documented disabilities.

 

Cindy Boyd, Testing Coordinator – Downtown Campus

Cindy oversees accommodated testing services at the Downtown Campus.   She is responsible for ensuring that students are provided with appropriate testing accommodations, based on the student’s documented disability.  She provides support and assistance to students needing assistive technologies for test taking, as well as maintaining an appropriate testing environment.  Cindy’s primary location is the Downtown Campus, however, she provides support at North, Surf City, and Burgaw Campus’s when needed.  Cindy earned her Bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina Wilmington.

 

Karen Kasten, Intake Technician

As an intake specialist, Karen immediately receives incoming, prospective, and current students with disabilities.  She ensures a confidential environment within the DSS office and provides information to customers regarding disability support services.  Karen also provides information and assistance to students, faculty, and staff regarding DSS policies and procedures.

Previous to Karen joining the DSS team, she worked with individuals with disabilities in a variety of settings, to include vocational, educational, and community settings.  She earned her Bachelor’s Degree from Appalachian State University.

 

Jennifer Luper, Assistant Testing Coordinator – North Campus

Jennifer oversees accommodated testing services at the North Campus.   She is responsible for ensuring that students are provided with an appropriate testing accommodations, based on the student’s documented disability.  Jennifer processes student requests for books in alternative format, as well as assisting them in determining the most appropriate format.  Jennifer’s primary location is the North Campus, however, she provides support at Downtown, Surf City, and Burgaw Campus’s when needed.  Jennifer earned her Bachelor’s degree from the University of North Carolina Wilmington.

 

Rebecca Schneider, Intake Technician

Rebecca is the newest member of the Disability Services team.  As an intake specialist, she immediately receives incoming, prospective, and current students with disabilities.  She ensures a confidential environment within the DSS office and provides information to customers regarding disability support services.  Rebecca also provides information and assistance to students, faculty, and staff regarding DSS policies and procedures.

Rebecca worked in the Disability Services office as a student at Boston College, while earning her Bachelor’s degree.  She has extensive computing and editing skills, to include database management and troubleshooting networking issues.

 

Maria Ortado, Interpreter Coordinator/Assistive Technology Specialist

Maria has been with CFCC since 2009 and is responsible for overseeing, coordinating and providing interpreting services for Deaf and Hard of Hearing students enrolled in curriculum classes at CFCC.  She recruits and evaluates interpreters/transliterators and serves as the department liaison for Deaf and Hard of Hearing issues.  Additionally, Maria also trains and provides technical assistance to students using Assistive Technologies.  Maria earned her Bachelor’s degree from Virginia Commonwealth University and her Associates in Applied Sciences in Interpreter Education at Blue Ridge Community College.
