Enrollment Verification Process for Internet & Hybrid Classes - Updated: 2012 Aug 9

The Enrollment Verification Requirement process is detailed below. This document contains background information, types of approved activities, a sample activity, and help information. Student completion of the Enrollment Verification Requirement also provides students with practice using Blackboard and the faculty with an indication of students’ ability to complete online activities.

Please Note: If you, as the course instructor, choose not to use the Sample Activity below, it is requested and required that you submit notification of how you will fulfill the Enrollment Verification Requirement to: http://cfcc.edu/dl/EnrollmentVerification/Exception.html.

Enrollment Verification should be completed no later than the first week of classes, and must be completed by the Census Date. For Hybrid courses this may mean the Enrollment Verification needs to be completed prior to your first class meeting.

Background:
In 2011 the Federal Government made changes to Title 4 (R2T4) that impacts how student enrollment is measured for online courses. Student attendance must now include academic engagement with the course; logging into a course site and completing an Enrollment Verification activity must be related to the subject of the course.

As of the Fall 2012 semester the Vice President of Instruction, Dr. Mandi Lee, is requiring all instructors to complete an Enrollment Verification that academically engages students with their course material. These activities may be examined during audits.

A sample activity is listed below.

Types of Approved Enrollment Verification activities:

  • Discussion Board posting about course subject matter*
  • Submit an Assignment
  • Ice Breaker Activity*

*Activities concerning logistics of course, exchanging personal/contact information, or ‘getting to know you’ activities are not considered academic engagement with subject matter. A simple e-mail from a student “checking in” is not sufficient for enrollment verification.

For tracking and auditing purposes, the Enrollment Verification should be completed in Blackboard, rather than through some other method (such as Groupwise email).

NOTE: If you, as the course instructor, choose not to use the Sample Activity below, it is requested and required that you submit notification of how you will fulfill the Enrollment Verification Requirement to: http://cfcc.edu/dl/EnrollmentVerification/Exception.html.
