Online Orientation

These pages are designed to provide an introduction to students intending to take either ENG 114 or HIS 121 online. While these pages will help familiarize you with these courses, it is strongly suggested that students attend orientation on campus at the beginning of the semester.  Look over the syllabus and course outline for the course you are interested in and then read all the other pages. At the bottom of the page, fill out the form verifying that you have read these pages.

Who Should Take an Online Course?

Online courses enable you to adjust your learning since the courses are taught primarily via the Internet rather than in the classroom. Online courses are not easier than traditional courses. Since these courses are academically equivalent to face-to-face classes, they are designed to be just as challenging and academically rigorous. You should plan to spend at least as much time, and possibly more, to be successful. Generally, students should be prepared  to connect to the course site at least 2-3 times a week.  Some students may need to connect 4 or 5 times a week.

Online courses differ from campus-based courses because:
1 they are accessible anytime from anywhere
2 they use communication technology via the Internet
3 “virtual” classroom participation is via E-mail and discussion forums
4 you work independently
5 frequently they are more difficult and time consuming than conventional courses.

Distance Education does not mean that you work at your own pace. Online courses are NOT independent study courses. These courses are highly structured and involve frequent interactions with the instructor and with other students enrolled in the course.  These courses have schedules that include weekly assignments due on specific days. Some assignments may have specific time deadlines. Students use the Internet for communicating with the instructor, accessing course materials, conducting research, and submitting assignments. Some assignments will require connecting to the course site and then accessing materials at other sites on the Internet. These courses contain interactive components that require students to participate in discussions with classmates.

You should be:
     highly motivated
     independent
     an active learner
     fluent in standard written English
able to read written directions and follow them
organized and have good time management skills
     committed to completing all work
     able to think critically
     comfortable with computer technology
     a problem solver

Distance Education requires students to become more responsible for their learning. Instructors create course materials, develop assignments, and help answer questions. Since students do not meet in a classroom, they must decide when and where to read the textbook and to complete assignments. Students need to schedule time to complete assignments. When there is some confusion, or when students need to ask questions, e-mail the instructor. Since we do not meet in a classroom, I am not able to look at you and determine if you have a question.
