Communicating With the Instructor

You can contact the instructor through e-mail and online discussions. Whenever you have a question about something, contact me. If you have a question, someone else in the class may be wondering about the same thing. If you need clarification or further explanation, ask.

I will generally check my e-mail daily.

                                          Submitting Assignments:

All work should be in standard edited English with no errors in spelling, grammar, and mechanics. All papers must be typed in an acceptable word processing form: Microsoft Word or WordPerfect.
                                       Do not use Microsoft Works.

Files sent using Microsoft Works will be returned unopened.

Files should be sent as attachments. Do not send ZIP files.

All assignments which are e-mailed MUST be sent as attachments. Using attachments allows files to be sent exactly as you format them in Microsoft Word.

English assignments may also be dropped off in the Arts and Science Department on the third floor of the McLeod (S) building or e-mailed to DutchML@mail.cfcc.net

History assignments may be dropped off in the Social and Behavioral Science Department on the third floor of the McLeod (S) building or e-mailed to DutchML@netscape.net

All assignments which are e-mailed MUST be sent as attachments. Using attachments allows files to be sent exactly as you format them in Microsoft Word.

Do not send Works files.
Do not send Excel files.

Any assignments which are not sent as attachments will lose their formatting.

Whenever you send an assignment, you need to make sure that you include a specific subject line so that it is clear which assignment you are sending. If you send an assignment titled Doc 1 or memo, it will be returned.

Assignments should have the subject line as follows:

For exercise 1 in chapter 4  --  IN2memos  CraneF  Ch4 ex1

What this does is to tell me that the student is in section IN2 and the he is sending one of the memo assignments. The student's name is Crane, and the assignment is exercise 1 from chapter  4.

If the student is in section IN3, then the subject line would be  --  IN3memos  CraneF  Ch4 ex1

Remember

include a specific subject line for every assignment.

Subject lines will begin:

IN2memos or IN3memos for all the memo assignments
IN2letters or IN3letters  for all the letter assignments in Ch 5 and 6
IN2resumes or IN3resumes for all the assignments in Ch 7
IN2practice or IN3practice for the practice report
IN2graphics or IN3graphics for all the assignments in Ch 12
IN2shortreports or IN3shortreports for all the assignments in Ch 15
IN2research or IN3research for the research report, Powerpoint, & brochure

1. Whenever you have a question, please contact the instructor. The response may be sent to all the students because it may be a question that others have thought about but not had the time to submit.

2. Students should also contact the instructor when deciding on a topic for a major paper or project. I may be able to provide suggestions for ideas or resources.

3. I will be holding virtual office hours - they will be online.

4. Successful students keep up with assignments, meet deadlines, and do not make excuses for every single assignment.

5. At the end of the semester, you evaluate the course. Keep a list of suggestions or ideas to make this a better course and an enjoyable learning experience. If you'd like, e-mail them to the instructor. This course is growing, and I want it to improve as I gain more experience.

6. If you find good Web sites related to the course, e-mail them to the instructor.

                  E-mail Guidelines

1. Students should keep the e-mail address of the instructor written down in a safe place in case other computers are used.
2. All e-mail should be addressed appropriately to the instructor or classmates. If you are sending e-mail from home computers to the instructor, please be careful to spell all information correctly.
3. Students should keep copies of all important e-mail correspondence to the instructor and to classmates until the course is over and a grade is posted. This way if a question arises about information, the student can refer to the printouts.
4. Students can expect a response from the instructor on an assignment within 24-48 hours after it is received but not immediately since instructors have other classes. If you have not heard from the instructor within the allotted time, send another e-mail message or call the instructor to make sure material has been received.
