Role of Student and Instructor

Role of student: Since you are taking an online course, you should be self motivated and actively engaged in the learning process. I assume that one of your primary expectations of this course is to learn more about the content of this course. To participate in this Internet based course, you will need access to a computer with Internet connectivity. You will need a browser (I recommend Netscape Navigator) and an e-mail access.

                                           MEETING DEADLINES

You must pay careful attention to the deadlines for completing each assignment or test. Meeting deadlines is the student's responsibility. Failure to complete discussion forums, quizzes, exams, and essay or other written assignments will result in a reduction of grade or NO GRADE for a particular assignment. Be sure to save your work in a document file on your computer before you submit it and allow plenty of time for transmission of your files electronically by e-mail. Don't assume that the telephone line connections are always working and always instantaneous.

Distance Education is a growing method of course delivery, especially for adult learners. Learners study course materials at a time and place they choose. It is your responsibility to decide when and how much you need to study. You will decide what method you will need to take notes and how to prepare for exams. The study guides provide you with sample essay questions and practice quizzes to help you prepare. These are tools which will benefit you if you use them. Learners need to be highly motivated to be successful in Distance Education courses. Think of this course as a way to develop your thinking and study skills. Employers will expect that you are prepared to go to work and accept the responsibilities that go with the job. Once you are on the job, you will also be expected to take responsibility for your own learning.

Role of instructor: As online courses develop, instructors will probably become facilitators of information and knowledge instead of possessors and transmitters of knowledge. Students need to be motivated to learn more about the content in the course; the instructor's role is to develop learning experiences and assignments in order for you to achieve this goal. I have developed assignments which are intended to help you learn about the content of the course. By completing the class assignments and projects, I believe you will achieve this goal.
