Bacteria produce restriction enzymes to cut up viral DNA

Bacteria take up plasmids

Technique:

Cut out source DNA with restriction enzyme

Open up plasmid with same restriction enzyme

Mix "prepared" DNA and plasmids

Mix plasmids with plasmid-less bacteria

Kill off other bacteria

Culture remaining bacteria
