Intro to Genetics: Historical Perspective

"Genetics" was first sorted out in mid-19TH century Europe

They knew some things about how traits are inherited:

                        Parent-offspring resemblance

                        "reversions"

                        "sports"

                        siblings similar, but not identical

They thought some things were more about genetics than they are:

                        Regeneration of lost body parts

They thought they knew some things that turned out to be untrue:

                        Telegony

                        Inheritance of acquired characteristics

                        Blending inheritance

Gregor Mendel sorted out how traits are inherited

Augustinian monk in the Czech Republic

Bred peas in greenhouse in monastery

Collected different pure-breeding varieties to investigate hybrids
