RECOMMENDED TEXT: Elementary Statistics Using the TI-83/84 Plus Calculator, 3rd edition by Mario Triola. The MyMathLab student access code is required to complete homework and quizzes. A TI 83 or 84 calculator is also required. Bring your book and calculator to class everyday. You must be logged in no later than midnight, January 14th to remain in both the course and the lab.
COURSE DESCRIPTION: This course is an introduction to descriptive and inferential statistics. Topics include sampling, distributions, plotting data, central tendency, dispersion, Central Limi Theorem, confidence intervals, hypothesis testing, correlations, regressions, and multinomial experiments.
COURSE OBJECTIVES: Upon completion, students should be able to: distinguish between a population and sample and between parameter and statistic, identify the level of measurement of a set, identify the importance of good sampling methods, summarize data by constructing multiple frequency tables, construct histograms, construct dot plots, construct stem-and-leaf plots, construct pie charts, calculate measures of central tendency, calculate measures of variance, compare z scores, construct box plots, calculate probabilities, calculate the standard error of the mean, approximate binomial probabilities using the normal distribution, calculate and use confidence intervals, perform hypothesis testing, and find regression information for a line.
CLASS HOURS/WEEK: 3 SEMESTER CREDIT: 3 LAB HOURS/WEEK: 2 SEMESTER CREDIT: 1
PREREQUISITES: Completion of MAT 080 or MAT 090. COREQUISITES: MAT 155A (lab)
EVALUATION: You will have three unit tests weighing 15% of your final grade each. You will have eleven online quizzes (I will drop one), the average of the remaining ten quizzes will represent 15% of your final course grade. THERE ARE NO MAKE UP OR LATE QUIZZES OR TESTS! IF YOU MISS A TEST, YOU WILL RECEIVE A GRADE OF “0”. You may replace the lowest test grade with your final exam grade. You will have labs as well as online homework to be completed outside of class to enhance your understanding of the material. The average of all your online homework and lab assignments will represent 20% of your final course grade. You will have a comprehensive final exam worth 20% of your course grade. THERE WILL BE NO MAKE UP OR LATE HOMEWORK OR LABS ACCEPTED! The grading scale is as follows:
92 - 100 A
84 - 91 B
76 - 83 C
68 - 75 D
67 - below F
We will be covering chapters 1 – 10. Test dates: Test 1: Thursday, February 3, covering chapters 1 – 3, sections 4.1 – 4.4. Test 2: Thursday, March 17th covering sections 4.5 – 4.7, chapters 5 and 6. Test 3: Thursday covering chapters 7, 8, 9.1 - 9.3 and 10.1 – 10.3. Comprehensive Final Exam: Tuesday, May 3.
ATTENDANCE: “Students must be in attendance at least eighty (80%) percent of the clock hours of a course to receive credit for the course. Those who do not meet minimum attendance requirements will be given the grade of “F”, which will be computed in the students’ grade point average as a failing grade.” “Attendance in online (Internet) courses is measured not only by initial log-in (you must be logged into Course Compass by midnight August 25th to remain enrolled in both MAT 155 and MAT 155A) but also by completion of 80% of the required course work.” (CFCC Catalog, page 19) Thus, you must meet two conditions in order to receive credit for this course. (1) You must not miss more than 6 class meetings. (2) You must complete at least 80% of all assignments (in-class and online combined). If you exceed either of these limits you will receive a grade of “F” for the course and the lab. You must arrive to class on time. Once class has begun, you may not leave and return in the same 75-minute class period. If you experience some emergency that requires you to leave during class, take all your materials and do not return until the next class period.
CELL PHONES: Cell phones should be turned off prior to entering the classroom. If I hear your cell phone ring during class or I observe you texting, 5 points will be deducted from you next test grade. If there are no more tests left, your final exam grade will be reduced by 5 points. Remove all head phones and headsets when entering the classroom.
TEST TAKING: Come to class early on test dates. You will not be admitted into the classroom late on test dates; therefore, arrive early. If the door is closed, you will receive a grade of “0” for that test. Be prepared, have a pencil and your calculator (check your calculator batteries the night before). You will not be allowed to share calculators on tests. Turn cell phones off prior to entering the classroom. Remove all head phones and headsets when entering the classroom. Come into the classroom ready to take the exam, do any last minute review or studying outside of the classroom. Remove everything from the top of your desk except your pencil and calculator. If scrap paper is needed, I will provide it. Once you have entered the classroom on exam days, you may not leave until you have completed the test. If you leave the classroom during an exam, you must turn in the exam and will not be allowed to return and continue working on it. If you finish the exam prior to the end of the class period, you may leave quietly after turning in your test.
LABS: Labs will consist of worksheets. These are to be completed outside of class; however, we may begin them in class. The assignments will enhance classroom instruction and prepare you for unit exams. You may use your notes, book and partners for labs. Labs will not be accepted late.
CHEATING: Following the procedures outlined in the 2010-2011 CFCC’s catalog on page 23, if I observe you cheating on an exam, you will receive a grade of “0” for that exam. If I observe you cheating on more than one exam, you will receive a grade of “F” for the course.
