TEXT:  Brief Calculus & Its Applications, eleveth edition, written by Goldstein, Lay, Schneider and Asmar, published by Pearson Printice Hall.  We will be using a TI-84 in class.  We will also be experimenting with Microsoft Excel and the publisher's site for online homework in this course.

COURSE DESCRIPTION:   This course introduces the concepts of differentiation and integration, and their applications to solving problems; the course is designed for students needing one semester of calculus.  Topics include functions, graphing, differentiation, and integration with emphasis on applications drawn from business, economics, and biological and behavioral sciences.  Upon completion of the course, students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the use of basic calculus and technology to solve problems and to analyze and communicate the results.  The lab component of the course is designed to enhance classroom activities.

PREREQUISITES:  Completion of MAT 161/171     COREQUISITES:  MAT 263A  (lab)

 

EVALUATION:  There will be 5 unit tests worth 100 points, each representing 12% of your grade.  THERE WILL BE NO MAKE UP TESTS! NO STUDENT WILL BE ADMITTED INTO THE CLASSROOM LATE ON TEST DATES! ALL WORK SHOULD BE DONE IN PENCIL!  Homework and/or projects will be assigned daily.  You are expected to complete the assignments.  There will be calculator/computer lab assignments throughout the semester.  The cumulative calculator/computer labs will be worth 20% of your final course grade.  LABS/ONLINE HOMEWORK WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED LATE! There will be a comprehensive final given.  This final exam will count 20% of your final course grade.  The grading scale is as follows:

                                                        92 - 100       A

                                                        84 -   91       B

                                                        76 -   83       C

                                                        68 -   75       D

                                                        67 - below    F

 

ATTENDANCE:  Attendance will be taken at the beginning of each class period.  Students absent any part of class (beginning or end) will be marked absent.  All cellar phones and/or beepers should be turned off prior to entering the classroom.  You must be in attendance 80% of the course hours; anything less will result in a grade of “F”.

We will be covering chapters 1 – 6 in your text.
