Huskins Classes

Huskins Classes are college classes that are designated primarily for high school students. Huskins classes may be offered either on a high school or a CFCC campus. See the Huskins Schedule for a list of classes offered at CFCC or a local high school. Students are enrolled in Huskins classes on a space-available basis. See below to learn about program costs, admission requirements, and enrollment information below.

Program Expenses
 
Tuition and Fees:

Tuition is FREE for fall and spring semesters. Students enrolled in Huskins classes that meet at CFCC or online will be charged student activity, technology, and parking/security fees. To see the current schedule of fees, please see our Tuition and Fees web page. Cosmetology Students: Cosmetology students must purchase professional liability insurance through CFCC. Fees are due at the time of registration.

Textbooks and Supplies:

Students are responsible for all required textbooks and supplies for each class you take. Some classes, such as cosmetology, will require students to purchase scrubs and other additional supplies. Your instructor will give you information on how to purchase supplies not found in the CFCC Bookstore. For textbook information on your class, please refer to the Spring 2010 Huskins Schedule. Admission Guidelines

 
Age and Grade Requirements:

You must be at least 16 years old to take a Huskins class that meets at CFCC. You must be at least a junior to take a Huskins class that meets at your high school.

High School Approval:

To enroll in this program, you must demonstrate that you are ready for the responsibility of taking college-level classes. High schools will recommend you for this program based on your academic performance and demonstrated maturity level. High school principals will also verify that you are making satisfactory progress towards graduation.

College Approval:

You need to meet all college requirements for each class you want to take. These requirements must be met before the class begins. Prerequisites for each course are listed in the course descriptions in the CFCC Catalog and Student Handbook.

Eligible Courses:

Huskins students may enroll in science, math, and technology college transfer courses in addition to most major courses in the Applied Science programs that do not have selective admissions or age requirements.

Huskins students may not enroll in transferable general education courses, physical education, college success skills, developmental courses (courses numbered below 100), or cooperative education courses.

Placement Tests:

See the Test Schedule for an updated schedule of placement test dates at CFCC.If you have qualifying SAT or ACT scores, you need to have your official test scores sent to CFCC. The college accepts SAT scores (CFCC College Code 5094) directly from the College Board at 1-866-756-7346 or ACT scores (CFCC College Code 3185) directly from American College Testing (319) 337-1313.

Official high school transcripts that post SAT or ACT results are also accepted. Check with your school counselors to make sure their test scores appear on their high school transcripts.

 
Registration Process
 
Application:

Submit the one-time Gateway Application directly to the high school counselor who coordinates this program at your school.

 
Enrollment:
New Hanover and Pender County Schools students should see the Spring 2010 Huskins Schedule for the upcomng Huskins classes that may be right for you. (Cape Fear Academy students should refer to the Spring 2010 CFA Huskins Schedule.)
 

You will need to submit a new Gateway Registration Card to your counselor each semester. Your counselor will send your card to CFCC after your principal approves it. Be sure to turn in your card by the due date established by your school.

 

All registration changes must be approved by your high school before you make changes at CFCC. See your counselor if you decide to change your CFCC schedule.
