CIS 110: Introduction to Computers

Prerequisites:   

  1. Accuplacer Test Score of 80 or higher on Reading, AND
  2. Accuplacer Test Score of 55 or higher on Arithmetic, AND
  3. Accuplacer Test Score of 55 or higher on Elementary Algebra

Important:

Students taking CIS 110 or CIS 111 online must have access to a computer with either Windows XP or Vista, Microsoft Office 2007 applications including Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Internet Explorer.  Students must use Internet Explorer to access SAM, the training and testing software for the courses.  Students will not be able to use Office 2003 programs for these courses.   

Course Description:

This course provides an introduction to computers and computing.  Topics include the impact of computers on society, ethical issues, and hardware/software applications, including spreadsheets, databases, word processors, graphics, the Internet, and operating systems.  Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the role and function of computers and use the computer to solve problems. This course has been approved to satisfy the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement general education core requirement in natural sciences/mathematics. This course may meet the second SACS mathematics requirement for AA, AS, AFA, AGE, AAS, DIP, or CER programs.

Course Description:

(Course) This is the first of two courses designed to emphasize topics which are fundamental to the study of calculus.  Emphasis is placed on equations and inequalities, functions (linear, polynomial, rational), systems of equations and inequalities, and parametric equations.  Upon completion, students should be able to solve practical problems and use appropriate models for analysis and predictions.  This course has been approved to satisfy the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement general education core requirement in natural sciences/mathematics.

(Lab) This course is a laboratory for MAT 171.  Emphasis is placed on experiences that enhance the materials presented in the class.  Upon completion, students should be able to solve problems, apply critical thinking, work in teams, and communicate effectively.  This course has been approved to satisfy the Comprehensive Articulation Agreement for transferability as a premajor and/or elective course requirement.
