  phone: (910)362-7623

  Office: S-202A

Ms. Shin received a BA in English and a BA in German from the University of California, Irvine, graduating with honors in both majors. She started her graduate work in German at UCI and then went to Princeton University to continue her studies in the Department of Germanic Languages and Literatures. She matriculated for 4 years at Princeton and also spent a year at Universität Hamburg in Hamburg, Germany, and a year at the University of Chicago as a visiting scholar. She has previously taught at UCI, Princeton University, and the University of Chicago.

Ms. Shin is known for her energetic and entertaining style of teaching. Using the “natural approach”, she immerses students in spoken German from day one so that they will learn the language in the most natural way possible and truly acquire competence in listening and speaking the language. She also weaves current events and material from Germany in all media formats to enhance the cultural experience for students.

In addition to language pedagogy, she is also engaged in scholarship, especially in the area of literary theory and feminist literary theory. She is also the author of the article, “She Would Rather Die In Fire: Reading Diotima’s Death in Hölderlin’s Hyperion, oder der Eremit in Griechenland,” which appeared in Women in German Yearbook. She continues her work in literary theory and Cultural Studies with a focus on feminism through teaching HUM 150, Women’s Studies, at CFCC.
