Welcome

As a subset of the Humanities and Fine Arts Department, the Language Department provides students with the opportunity to develop both cultural and linguistic competence. Talented instructors implement a variety of teaching styles and methodologies that serve to enhance the foreign language learning experience. Additionally, language courses are transferable and credit is awarded for the fulfillment of a foreign language requirement when followed according to program requirements.

 

Languages Courses

FRE 111 Elementary French I

This course introduces the fundamental elements of the French language within a cultural context. Emphasis is placed on the development of basic listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.

 

FRE 112 Elementary French II

This course is a continuation of FRE 111 focusing on the fundamental elements of the French language within a cultural context. Emphasis is placed on the progressive development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.

 

FRE 211 Intermediate French I

This course provides a review and expansion of the essential skills of the French language. Emphasis is placed on the study of authentic and representative literary and cultural texts.

 

FRE 212 Intermediate French II

This course is a continuation of FRE 211. Emphasis is placedon the continuing study of authentic and representative literaryand cultural texts.

 

GER 111 Elementary German I

This course introduces the fundamental elements of the German language within a cultural context. Emphasis is placed on the development of basic listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.

 

GER 112 Elementary German II

This course is a continuation of GER 111 focusing on the fundamental elements of the German language within a cultural context. Emphasis is placed on the progressive development of listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.

 

GER 211 Intermediate German I

This course provides a review and expansion of the essential skills of the German language. Emphasis is placed on the study of authentic and representative literary and cultural texts.

This course is a continuation of GER 211. Emphasis is placedon the continuing study of authentic and representative literary and cultural texts.

 

 SPA 111 Elementary Spanish I

This course introduces the fundamental elements of the Spanish language within a cultural context. Emphasis is placed on the development of basic listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.

 

SPA 112 Elementary Spanish II

This course is a continuation of SPA 111 focusing on the fundamental elements of the Spanish language within a cultural context. Emphasis is placed on the progressive development of

listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills.

 

SPA 141 Culture and Civilization

This course provides an opportunity to explore issues related to the Hispanic world. Topics include historical and current events, geography, and customs.

 

SPA 161 Cultural Immersion

This course explores Hispanic culture through intensive study on campus and field experience in a host country or area. Topics include an overview of linguistic, historical, geographical, sociopolitical, economic, and/or artistic concerns of the area visited.

 

SPA 211 Intermediate Spanish I

This course provides a review and expansion of the essential skills of the Spanish language. Emphasis is placed on the study of authentic and representative literary and cultural texts.

 

SPA 212 Intermediate Spanish II

This course provides a continuation of SPA 211. Emphasis is placed on the continuing study of authentic and representative literary and cultural texts.

 

SPA 221 Spanish Conversation

This course provides an opportunity for intensive communication in spoken Spanish. Emphasis is placed on vocabulary acquisition and interactive communication through the discussion of media materials and authentic texts.

 

SPA 231 Spanish Reading and Composition

This course provides an opportunity for intensive reading and composition in Spanish. Emphasis is placed on the use of literary and cultural materials to enhance and expand reading and writing skills.
