MUS 110- Music Appreciation    

This course is a basic survey of the music of the Western world. Emphasis is placed on the elements of music, terminology, composers, form, and style within a historical perspective.

MUS 111- Fundamentals of Music

This course is an introductory course for students with little or no music background. Emphasis is placed on music notation, rhythmic patterns, scales, key signatures, intervals, and chords.

MUS 112- Introduction to Jazz

This course introduces the origins and musical components of jazz and the contributions of its major artists. Emphasis is placed on the development of discriminating listening habits, as well as the investigation of the styles and structural forms of the jazz idiom.

MUS 113- American Music

This course introduces various musical styles, influences, and composers of the United States from pre-Colonial times to the present. Emphasis is placed on the broad variety of music particular to American culture.

MUS 121- Music Theory I

This course provides an in-depth introduction to melody, rhythm, and harmony. Emphasis is placed on fundamental melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic analysis, introduction to part writing, ear-training, and sight-singing.

MUS 122- Music Theory II

This course is a continuation of studies begun in MUS 121. Emphasis is placed on advanced melodic, rhythmic, and harmonic analysis and continued studies in part-writing, ear-training, and sight-singing.

MUS 123- Music Composition

This course provides a study of elementary forms and traditional approaches to the organization of melody, harmony, rhythm, etc. in musical composition. Emphasis is placed on using musical notation to create new musical works

MUS 210- History of Rock Music

This course is a survey of Rock music from the early 1950’s to the present. Emphasis is placed on musical groups, soloists, and styles related to the evolution of this idiom and on related historical and social events.

MUS 211- History of Country Music

This course introduces the varied origins of country music and the commercialization of this art form. Emphasis is placed on historical, sociocultural, and stylistic factors related to country music and musicians.

MUS 212- American Musical Theatre

This course covers the origins and development of the musical from Show Boat to the present. Emphasis is placed on the investigation of the structure of the musical and its components through listening and analysis.

MUS 214- Electronic Music

This course provides an opportunity to study and explore various electronic instruments and devices. Emphasis is placed on fundamental MIDI applications and implementation, features and application of sequences, sound modules, and digital keyboards.

MUS 215- Electronic Music II

This course is a continuation of MUS 214. Emphasis is placed on advanced MIDI  applications and implementation and continued work with sequencers, sound modules, and digital keyboards.

MUS 221- Music Theory III

This course is a continuation of MUS 122.  Emphasis is placed on altered and chromatic harmony, common practice era- compositional techniques and forms, and continued studies in part-writing, ear-training, and sight-singing.

MUS 222- Music Theory IV

This course is a continuation of MUS 221.  Emphasis is placed on continued study of common practice era-compositional techniques and forms, 20th century practices, ear-training, and sight-singing.
