Workplace Answers – Mandatory Training for Employees

Your continuing education and a harassment-free work environment are two major priorities for our campus, so we’ve partnered with one of the leaders in the Risk Management industry, WorkplaceAnswers, to provide on-line training courses to help toward these goals.

Each employee has been registered for 2-3 courses which began on December 10, 2013.  Below is the course material which will be reviewed.  You will receive reminder e-mails to let you know what is up and coming.

  • Title IX Awareness and Violence Prevention for Faculty and Staff
  • Unlawful Harassment Prevention
  • Unlawful Harassment Prevention Supervisor Supplement (if applicable)

It is recommended that the courses be completed within the next 30 days.  Courses will end June 30, 2014. 

If you are a full-time or regularly reoccurring part-time employee, you should have received an email from Workplace Answers eLearning [] that contains your unique, personal quick link to access your training. Please save this email or copy the link to your favorites. This link will be how you access your web-based training which you can complete on any computer with an internet connection.

The training is very easy to access and engaging, so we expect little difficulty with accessing the courses, but please feel free to contact us directly with any questions or concerns.

Part-time faculty will be paid on a non-instructional contract.  Part-time employees who complete the 2 hours of training in December will be paid for the training in their January 2014 paycheck. HR will notify supervisors of those employees who complete the training at the end of each month.

For those who do not have regular internet access, we will reserve a space that will allow you to complete the training. Please contact HR directly to reserve a spot. The point of contact for this training is Jeff Miles, HR Generalist. He can be reached at (910) 362-7423 or by email.

State Health Plan: ID Card Issues

The following is a message I received from the State Health Plan. I do not know if any CFCC employees are affected, but if so the problem should be corrected within 10 days:


Members are beginning to receive their ID cards in the mail. We want to make you aware of some issues we are experiencing with ID cards.

  • Approximately 500 members have received Traditional 70/30 Plan ID cards when they actually elected another plan during Open Enrollment.
  • Approximately 4,000 members elected a Primary Care Provider (PCP) during Open Enrollment and received their ID cards, but had their PCP election as “none selected.”
  • Approximately 500 members who elected a Medicare Advantage Enhanced Plan received a Medicare Advantage Base Plan ID card from UnitedHealthcare.

It is very important to note that these are ID card only issues. Member elections are properly saved in eEnroll. Corrective action steps are under way. Members should be receiving new, corrected ID cards within 10 days. Please advise your employees who are experiencing ID card issues to call Customer Service at 855-859-0966 if they do not receive updated cards within 10 days.

Message from Payroll regarding new NC-4 requirement

The following is a message from the CFCC Payroll Department: 

Your Action Required for Your Payroll

The NC General Assembly recently enacted House Bill 998, which becomes effective January 1, 2014.  Under the new law, taxpayers will pay a lower rate and be granted a higher standard deduction.  Taxpayers may no longer claim a personal exemption for themselves, their spouse, children, or other qualifying dependents.  The new law also changes other deductions and tax credits.

As a result of this Act, the College is required to have all employees provide a new Employee’s Withholding Allowance Certification, either Form NC-4EZ or Form NC-4.  If an employee fails to provide a new Form NC-4EZ or Form NC-4, the College is required to withhold North Carolina tax based on the status of single with no allowances.  The College has no choice but to comply with this requirement.

The Payroll Department requests that all employees complete their new withholding form and submit it to the Payroll Office in the Union Station Building by Friday, December 13.  Please keep in mind the form contains personal information, including your social security number, when submitting the form.  Employees submitting their new form by December 13 will ensure that this very important matter is resolved before the College closes for the holidays, and will not risk returning to work in January and forgetting to submit a form.  This notice will be sent again via “CAPEFEAR ALL” email on January 2 as a final reminder to submit your form by Monday, January 6.  January 6 is the cutoff for all payroll documents needed to run the January payroll.  If an employee does not submit a new form directly to the Payroll Department by the January 6 cutoff, the employee’s withholding status will be changed to single with no allowances. Also, due to time restraints, the Payroll Department will not contact employees individually to remind employees to submit this form.

The Form NC-4EZ and Form NC-4 are attached.  Employees must complete one of the two attached forms.  The Form NC-4EZ is a shorter form and can be used by taxpayers that meet specified criteria.  The criteria are listed on the form. Payroll must receive the original tax form with signature. If submitting the NC-4, you only need to submit the NC-4 tax form itself and not the other six pages.

Deans, Directors, Coordinators, Mangers, Supervisors, and Administrative Personnel:  The Payroll Department is asking for your assistance in discussing this requirement with employees in your areas to help spread the word about this new requirement.
