INTRODUCTION to INTERIOR DESIGN

I.          COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course covers the basic principles of interior design as they relate specifically to interior design, furniture arrangement, wall composition, color, furnishings, collages, and illustration. Emphasis is placed on spatial relationships, craftsmanship, and visual presentation techniques. 

II.                 COURSE OBJECTIVES

Upon completion, students should be able to arrange furnishings in rooms for various purposes, select furnishings and colors, and illustrate ideas graphically.

III.       COURSE CONTENT

The organization of the class presents a logical procedure for designing an interior.

·        Programming

·        Floorplan

·        Furnishings arrangement

·        Selection of furnishings and accessories

·        Elevations

·        Isometrics and Perspectives

·        Color schemes

·        Illustration

·        Presentation

The class reviews or presents each of the concepts above.

Conferences are held with each student towards the end of the semester to identify strengths and areas that need to be improved upon.

The concept of an interior designer as a problem solver is developed through assignments, which search for possibilities rather than limitations.

Attendance may affect the final grade average based on the attendance policy as stated in the syllabus.

Late work may affect the final grade average based on the “late work” policy as stated in the syllabus.
