Cosmetology Program
Planning Year
Purpose Statement :
The cosmetology curriculum is designed to provide competency-based knowledge, scientific/artistic principles, and hands-on fundamentals associated with the cosmetology industry. The curriculum provides a simulated salon environment that enables students to develop manipulative skills. Graduates should qualify to sit for the State Board of Cosmetic Arts examination. Upon successfully passing the State Board exam, graduates will be issued a license. Licensed graduates will be qualified to seek employment in beauty salons and as skin/nail specialists, platform artists and related business.
#1 Objective / Intended Student Outcome
Graduates of the Cosmetology program will be technically proficient in hair styling.
Procedures/Assessment Methods
1a. At the close of the students' final semester in the COS 108, cosmetology faculty not teaching COS 108 will evaluate students' ability to perform five different haircuts and hairstyles on live patrons as assigned in a given period of time and documented on a skill checklist using the NC State Board performance criteria.
1b. State Board exam pass rates will be used to determine students' technical proficiency.
Criteria for Success
1a. 90% of the students in their final semester will successfully perform the five haircuts and hairstyles according to performance criteria.
1b. 90% of the graduates will pass the State Board exam on first try.
Results
1a. 85% of the students were able to perform the five haircuts and hairstyles to State Board performance standards.
1b. 90% of the cosmetology graduates passed the State Board exam on first try.
Use of Results (Improvements; action taken based on Results)
1a. COS 102 and 202 were modified to include more hands-on time for haircuts and styles and evaluation of these skills. Will assess outcome again next year.
1b. Pass rate met expectation so no action was necessary for improving student performance. This outcome will be assessed again next year.
#2 Objective / Intended Student Outcome
Graduates of the Cosmetology program will be technically proficient in hair coloring and permanent waving.
Procedures/Assessment Methods
2a. In an end of program course, COS 108, students will be judged by faculty not teaching COS 108 on their ability to perform three hair coloring assignments on live patrons within a given period of time using NC State Board performance criteria and documented on a checksheet.
2b. In an end of program course, COS 108, students will be judged by faculty not teaching COS 108 on their ability to give a perm to two live patrons in a given period of time using the NC State Board performance criteria.
Criteria for Success
2a. 90% of the students evaluated will successfully perform the hair coloring assignments.
2b. 90% of the students will successfully perform the perm assignments.
Results
2a. 85 % of the students successfully performed the hair coloring assignments.
2b. 95% of the students were successfully performed the perm assignments.
Use of Results (Improvements; action taken based on Results)
2a. COS 201 has been modified to include more hands-on experience with hair coloring techniques. This student outcome will be assessed again next planning cycle.
2b. Students' performance exceeded expectation and no improvements were needed.
#3 Objective / Intended Student Outcome
Employers of Cosmetology graduates will rate the technical and academic skills of the graduates as ‘ average' or ‘above average'.
Procedures/Assessment Methods
3a. The Employer Survey administered every five years during the program review process will be used to collect employer satisfaction data.
3b. Cosmetology faculty will survey the Cosmetology Advisory Committee members regarding their satisfaction with Cosmetology graduates they have hired.
Criteria for Success
3a. Employers will rate graduates on a survey questions as ‘above average' on five areas of competency. ‘Above average' is higher then a 3.0 on a 5.0 scale, however, if any of the five survey questions has an individual rating below a 3.0, that individual course area performance will be reviewed further.
3b. 90% of the advisory members will indicate on the survey that they would employ future graduates of the Cosmetology program.
Results
3a. Four of the competencies on the survey were rated 3.0 or higher by employers. A fourth competency, interpersonal skills, was rated as ‘below average'.
3b. 100% of the advisory members indicated they would employ future graduates of the Cosmetology program.
Use of Results (Improvements; action taken based on Results)
3a. More emphasis is being placed on interpersonal skills in the curriculum, more specifically in COS 114.
3b. No action taken, but advisory members will be surveyed annually to track their satisfaction with graduates.
