SurfCFCC Wireless Guidelines
Cape Fear Community College offers its wireless network as a service to CFCC students, faculty and staff. Access will be granted to the wireless network through username and password authentication. CFCC does not provide personal technical support for users attempting to access its wireless network and does not guarantee specific rates of speed or uninterrupted service.
Users of the wireless network are responsible for ensuring they have the appropriate compliant wireless card (802.11b or g) properly configured and are running up-to-date anti-Virus and anti-Spyware software on their wireless device. A Personal Firewall is strongly recommended.
The wireless network is not secure (i.e., it is not encrypted using WEP, WPA, etc.). The level of security of your transactions, files on your hard drive and general web surfing will depend on the level of security precautions you have taken with your computer. Users must be aware that as they connect their devices through the wireless network they expose their devices to: worms, viruses, Trojan horses, denial-of-service attacks, intrusions, packet-sniffing and other abuses by third-parties. CFCC discourages the conducting of confidential transactions (such as online banking, credit card usage) over any wireless network, including our own. It is strongly recommended that you turn off file sharing on your operating system.
Use of the CFCC wireless network and the Internet in general is at the USER’S SOLE RISK. CFCC is not liable for any loss, damage, security infringement or injury which the user may sustain as a result of being allowed access to the wireless network.
The user is responsible for any actions taken from their device, whether intentional or
unintentional, that causes damages or otherwise affects other devices or users of the network.
The CFCC network, wireless or hardwired, is not to be used for:
• commercial use
• malicious actions, such as denial of service attacks
• harassment of other computer users
• distribution of pornographic materials
• copyright violations
• offering of network or Internet services
• file-sharing or other bandwidth intensive applications that may degrade quality of service.
No wireless spectrum interference or disruption of other authorized communications is permitted.
Applications supported over the wireless network will be limited, as long as this is necessary to provide an acceptable quality of service for all users.
All conditions of the Student Acceptable Use Policy apply to the use of this wireless network. Do not share your share your username or password with anyone or allow another access to the wireless network under your username and password. Your username and password are your keys to access all your web accounts, and sharing them will compromise your privacy and security.
Failure to abide by the Student Acceptable Use Policy may result in loss of access to wireless network and/or any remedies stated within that policy.
