Description:
Bodega Marine Laboratory (BML) is an Organized Research Unit (ORU) of the University of California, Davis. Located in Bodega Bay, CA, BML and its surrounding 362-acre Reserve provides research and instructional facilities for resident and campus-based faculty, researchers and students. Primary research emphasis is on oceanographic influences on marine population; coastal atmospheric chemistry; marine ecology and impacts of non-native species; responses of marine organisms to environmental stress; fish ecology, conservation and restoration; and coastal terrestrial ecology.
Under general supervision, lead, coordinate and participate in a variety of technical tasks associated with the design, construction, deployment, operation, maintenance and repair of scientific instrumentation and sensors in support of coastal ocean research and BML's science-based oceanographic/meteorological observing system.
Serve as an on-shore and sea-going technician for deployment, testing, operation, maintenance and repair of meteorological, oceanographic and vessel instrumentation, including Acoustic Doppler Current Profilers (ADCP), conductivity, temperature, depth recorders (CTD), transmissometers, fluorometers, thermosalinographs, oceanographic moorings, buoys, associated remote communications and telemetry, and vessel based underway data acquisition system (UDAS).
Conduct and supervise data management tasks including recovery, processing, organization, distribution, and archival of data obtained from land-based, moored and vessel-mounted instruments.
Develop best practices for data routing and lead data QA/QC and metadata collection.
Monitor expenditures to assure cost effectiveness of proposed projects and to enable proper scheduling of purchases, repairs and upgrades, and to prepare expense projections.
Provide training and direction to scientists, staff and students in the selection, operation, and maintenance of research instrumentation, and inform decisions regarding instrument solutions for project-based deployment/data collection.
Function as liaison among multiple organizations interacting with BML's oceanography program, including NOAA, USGS, National Marine Sanctuaries, National Seashore.
Take a leadership role in organizing and facilitating oceanographic research within BML, and participate and/or lead Bodega Oceanography Group meetings.
