This position serves as a technician for an ongoing federal-aid grant study entitled “Survey of Population Parameters of Marine Recreational Fishes in North Carolina.” The primary purpose of this position is to collect, code, and process ageing structures (i.e. otoliths, scales and spines) and biological data for fourteen important marine recreational fishes. The technician assists the principle biologist with analysis and the preparation of necessary reports. Job duties include collecting ageing structures from recreational and commercial catches, tracking age samples collected state wide, maintaining ageing lab equipment, coding and cataloging age samples, cleaning age structures, pressing scales, sectioning and polishing otoliths, compiling and verifying key entered data. The age and reproductive data are provided to the federal fisheries management councils/ commissions (ASMFC, SAFMC, MAFMC) to ensure the quality of data used in coast-wide stock assessments. A valid NC driver's license is required. The ability to swim is a requirement.
 Knowledge, Skills and Abilities / Competencies:
(1) Experience with collecting biological data. (2) Experience with commercial and/or recreational fisheries. (3) Knowledge of marine species identification. (4) Experience operating lab equipment and fisheries sampling equipment. (5) Knowledge of fish ageing techniques. (6) Experience operating boats and boat trailers. (7)   Experience preparing scientific reports. (8) Experienced in computer software to maintain and manipulate data sets, and properly code biological data for computer entry.    
 Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:
Associate's degree in fisheries management from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of experience in the fisheries industry; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Experience with vessel operation may be required. Minimum education and experience requirements for a trainee appointment: Associate's degree in fisheries management; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
