Coastal Carolina University is accepting applications for a Research Specialist in Coastal Carolina University's School of Coastal and Marine Systems Science. Position is a full-time annual appointment with benefits. This position will maintain and service an instrumentation array along the length of the Savannah River system within precise tolerances and calibrations required for scientific and resource management applicatons.
Duties will include, but are not limited to: deploying and servicing data sonde buoys and instrumentation along the length of the Savannah River; operating from small boats and basing away from home office approximately one week every month throughout the year; servicing buoy arrays and instrumentation; maintaining sensors within calibration specifications; making basic repairs of gear as needed and coordinating more extensive servicing needs with instrument manufacturer; maintaining and updating metadata as needed for deployments, calibration and servicing of instrumentation; participating in periodic interlab calibration of instrumentation; producing reports on calibration, deployment and instrument performance; communicating with supervisors and IR PI's on buoy and instrumentation and operational support readiness; and projecting needs for operational support (vessel/outboard motor, buoy hardware) scheduled maintanence or major repair.
Requirements: A bachelor’s degree in marine science, environmental science or related field or associates in marine technology or electronics or related field and competence operating small boats and experience with deploying and maintaining scientific field equipment and instrumentation required. Must pass university certification for small boat operation. Experience with operation, maintanence and calibration of water quality sondes and/or other water based research instrumentation required. Strong computer, organizational and communication skills required. Must be able to work independently in the field and ensure quality control and assurance standards are maintained and properly documented. A US Coast Guard Captian's license ("six-pack") or higher preferred. Extensive travel required. Must also be able to climb ladder to service instrumentation on platforms (20').
