Getting Started with Blackboard
All courses at CFCC whether online, hybrid, or face-to-face are provided with a Blackboard course shell. If you are new to Blackboard the Online Learning Team recommends the following resources to help orient you to the Blackboard environment and some of its most commonly used tools.
In addition to the online resources, the Online Learning team is available for one-on-one consultations or help. Feel free to contact us with any questions you may have.
Faculty Introduction to Blackboard
All faculty are auto-enrolled in the non-required course, Faculty Introduction to Blackboard. Its purpose is to introduce faculty who are new to or unfamiliar with the Blackboard Learning Management System. You will be introduced to the course environment while having the opportunity to interact with Bb tools and navigation.
- Log in to MyCFCC
- Click the Bb icon labeled “My Classes”
- Under the “Course List” section, find the heading “Courses where you are: Student”.
- Click the “Faculty Introduction to Blackboard” link to enter the course.
- Follow the directions posted on the landing page (Announcements) in the course.
Below are recommended resources for learning how to use the most common tools while adding and creating content in your Blackboard courses. We suggest working through the checklist in the order presented to aid in the basic construction of your Blackboard course. When you have completed the checklist, there are additional tools and feature tutorials on our How to Tutorials page.
The checklist below includes hyperlinks to specific Blackboard tutorials or you may choose to access the printable version with the web addresses provided.
This section will orient you to Blackboard’s navigation and control panel. You will learn how to add items to the course menu and become familiar with common Bb functionalities and terms.

These tools in Blackboard are used primarily for communicating important course information to students. You are provided with the basic instructions for implementing these tools in a course. More specific and advanced tutorials for some of these features can be found on the How to Tutorials Page.
- Discussion Board
Content Areas are created and linked in the course menu. These areas serve as containers for housing and presenting your instructional material. You can include content such as text, file attachments, links to websites, tests, assignments, and multimedia.
With Course Files, you have access to all of your files for a specific course. You can organize, view, manage, and link to files as suits your needs.

The Grade Center contains student assessment submissions and other grading information for the course. Due to its flexibility, it can be complicated to learn how to manage, so it is strongly suggested that you spend some time working in this area of your course. It is strongly suggested that you view the How to Tutorials or contact a member of the Online Learning team before setting up your grade book.
Tests and Quizzes
Blackboard has a test tool that allows you to create your own self-scoring tests. This is just one method for providing a quiz or test in Blackboard. Test and quizzes created by the instructor offer a variety of question types. Additionally, some publishers have test banks that can be exported to Blackboard and there are third party tools (i.e. Respondus and BYU Test Generator) that can be used to help facilitate test creation.
