What is the Difference Between Registration and Certification?
Registration
- Being included on a list
- Some states (and the list is growing) require pharmacy technicians to “register”
- The NC State Board of Pharmacy requires registration in order to work as a pharmacy technician in the state
- $30.00/year www.ncbop.org
- As of 2010, the NCBOP reports 14,448 registered technicians in the state
Certification
- A non-governmental agency/association recognizes individuals who have met certain pre-determined qualifications/specifications
- Usually involves passing a certification exam
- Currently national certification of pharmacy technicians is offered through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) www.ptcb.org and is voluntary in North Carolina
- Other states require this certification
- Some employers require this certification
- Momentum is building in the country to require this in all states
