What is the Difference Between Registration and Certification?


  1. Being included on a list
  2. Some states (and the list is growing) require pharmacy technicians to “register”
  3. The NC State Board of Pharmacy requires registration in order to work as a pharmacy technician in the state
    1. $30.00/year
    2. As of 2014, the NCBOP reports 17,307 registered pharmacy technicians in the state


  1. A non-governmental agency/association recognizes individuals who have met certain pre-determined qualifications/specifications
  2. Usually involves passing a certification exam
  3. Currently national certification of pharmacy technicians is offered through the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB)  and is voluntary in North Carolina
    1. Other states require this certification
    2. Some employers require this certification
    3. Momentum is building in the country to require this in all states
