Description:
Aquarist interns will help the Marine Science Director in
aquarium operations, collecting specimens, educational
development of current and future programs, and all aspects
of maintaining a healthy, diverse aquarium.
Located on site at Camp Emerald Bay on the northeast side
of the island, the Pennington Marine Science Center functions
as an outreach and education center for the Boy Scouts of
America during the summer and outdoor education programs
(Naturalist at Large, Mountain Sea Adventures, YMCA, etc.)
during the fall and spring. Kelp forests dominate the ecosystem
just off shore from the center.
Pay rate: Food and housing for duration of internship plus
transportation from the mainland to the island also provided
at the beginning and the end of the internship. Stipend available.
Requirements:
- SCUBA certification, intern should own mask, snorkel, fins,
and booties (other gear provided) - Strong writing skills
and organization - Basic mechanical aptitude, willingness
to work with your hands - Knowledge of marine safety/ boating
- Interest in aquaria, marine conservation, and the teaching
of marine science.
-Aquarium operations: daily checks (morning, afternoon, and
night), exhibit cleaning, lab maintenance, feeding of animals,
life support room operations.
-Exhibit design project: Research local habitat for design
ideas/theme/focus/intent to be implemented during stay.
-Specimen collection: Aid director in collection of aquarium
specimens via SCUBA. Help facilitate proper transportation
of specimens and introduction into aquarium exhibits.
