Job Description: We are currently seeking one full-time fisheries field biologist
to help with multiple field projects. This position is scheduled to be funded
for four years. Individuals will work throughout Florida using various sampling
gears including: electrofishing boats, gillnets, trawls, throw traps, GPS, and
water chemistry meters. This is a physically demanding job. Trap sampling requires
wading in shallow water. Field sampling events will occur almost daily for most
of the year. Some lab work will be required to process fish samples and age sport
fish using otolith ageing techniques. Data entry will be performed as necessary.
Individuals may interact with collaborating scientists and faculty at the University
of Florida Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences Department, allowing an interface for
individuals that plan to continue their education in the future.
Cooperation and Integration: Individuals must be able to work well as a team,
and have the skills and personality to work well with a variety of different
people and projects.
Administration: Employees will have to perform various routine administrative
tasks as required, including: time-keeping, vehicle and travel reports, ordering
supplies, and processing paper work for purchases. Select employees may occasionally
supervise the work of other biologists or technicians.
Equipment and Facility Operation and Maintenance: Applicants must be able to
operate boats and vehicles and be capable of doing minor field repairs of equipment.
Qualifications: Applicants must have a bachelor’s or master’s degree
in one of the following: fisheries biology, marine biology, wildlife biology,
zoology, ecology, or a related discipline. Experience working on lakes, operating
boats or assessing fish habitat is highly desirable. Qualified individuals that
can make at least a 1-year commitment will be given preference. Candidates must
be willing and able to work long hours and in remote locations. Candidates must
be physically capable of lifting and using heavy sampling gear. Individuals must
have a valid driver’s license. Applicants who possess good problem solving
abilities and a willingness to work in a team environment are encouraged to
