Building pathways to education, employment, and independence.<\/h2>\n

CFCC\u2019s Bridge to Independence Program supports students with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) as they explore education and career opportunities aligned with their interests and strengths. Through personalized guidance and partnerships with local employers, students gain real-world experience, build confidence, and prepare for meaningful, long-term employment. Our goal is simple: create inclusive pathways that empower every student to thrive.<\/p>\n

A Path Forward, Built Around You <\/div>

CFCC\u2019s Bridge to Independence Program is designed for students with developmental disabilities who want to explore education, build job skills, and prepare for meaningful employment. We focus on helping each student discover their strengths, interests, and goals, and then provide the support needed to move forward with confidence.<\/p>\n

Students participate in hands-on learning, career exploration, and real-world work experiences, all under the guidance of caring instructors and staff.<\/p>\n

Our goal is simple: help students gain independence, confidence, and the skills they need to succeed in work and life.<\/p>\n<\/p> <\/div> <\/div>

Program Description <\/div>

The Bridge to Independence program is an academic program designed to enhance reading, writing, math, computer skills, and employability skills to prepare students for volunteering, employment, or college. Students in the program will have the opportunity to collaborate with CFCC\u2019s vocational programs for career discovery.<\/p>\n

Courses additionally focus on helping students gain the necessary skills to find meaningful job or volunteer opportunities aligned with their interests and strengths.<\/p>\n

The Bridge to Independence program works with local employers to create opportunities to hire and build unique positions for adults with IDD that will prepare them to succeed in a chosen career field.<\/p>

Class Schedule <\/div>

Class is held in the S (McLeod) Building at CFCC\u2019s downtown Wilmington campus and meets Monday \u2013 Thursday from 9:00AM \u2013 2:00PM.<\/p>

Program Requirements <\/div>

Age Requirement <\/strong>
\nStudents must be 18 years of age or older.<\/p>\n

Basic Education Proficiency<\/strong>
\nThis program requires standardized ongoing assessment of learners\u2019 progress in adult literacy. Students are given an initial test at intake \u2013 the Comprehensive Adult Student Assessment System (CASAS) to determine their placement levels in reading and math.<\/p>\n

Adaptive Behavior\/Skills Checklist <\/strong>
\nStudents must submit two (2) Adaptive Behavior\/Skills Checklists completed by someone who has worked with them in a professional capacity which indicate the student\u2019s ability to successfully participate in the Bridge to Independence program. A family member\/parent\/guardian should not complete the behavior checklist.<\/p>\n

For Employers<\/h3>
Building Inclusive Workplaces, Together <\/div>

CFCC\u2019s Bridge to Independence Program partners with local employers to create supportive employment opportunities for individuals with developmental disabilities. Through this program, businesses gain access to motivated, well-prepared individuals who bring dedication, reliability, and valuable perspectives to the workplace.<\/p>\n

CFCC works closely with employers to share best practices and provide guidance on supporting employees with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Our team offers ongoing support to both students and employers to help ensure successful placements and positive, long-term experiences.<\/p>\n

By partnering with CFCC, employers play a direct role in strengthening the local workforce while fostering a welcoming and supportive workplace culture. Together, we’re opening doors, building skills, and creating opportunities that benefit everyone.<\/p>\n
