You landed the interview. Your hard work is paying off.<\/p>\n<p>CFCC Career Development professionals are available to help you prepare for your interview, but here are some resources you may explore as well.<\/p>\n<p>The primary goal of an interview is for employers to assess if an applicant has the skills to perform a job.\u00a0 In addition, they are trying to determine if applicants can work well with their team, in their environment.\u00a0 From the moment you arrive, you are being assessed. They are paying attention to the following:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><em>Did you arrive on time?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Are you dressed appropriately for the interview?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Do you make eye contact with those you\u2019re talking with?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Do you present with confidence?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Did you research information about the company and\/or the position to which you\u2019ve applied?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Can you respond to questions directly and concisely?<\/em><\/li>\n<li><em>Did you follow up the interview with a written \u201cthank you?\u201d<\/em><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Consistently, employers across the country indicate they are seeking candidates with the following competencies.\u00a0 Reflect on your academic and work experience.\u00a0 Consider how you\u2019ve learned or refined some of these by successfully completing courses at CFCC.<\/p>\n<ol>\n<li>Critical Thinking\/Problem Solving<\/li>\n<li>Oral\/Written Communication<\/li>\n<li>Teamwork\/Collaboration<\/li>\n<li>Digital Technology<\/li>\n<li>Leadership<\/li>\n<li>Professional\/Work Ethic<\/li>\n<li>Career Management<\/li>\n<li>Global\/Intercultural Fluency<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p>What\u2019s a\u00a0<strong>Behavioral Interview<\/strong>?\u00a0Employers can read your resume. Now they want to know what would you do, or how would you handle specific situations. \u00a0The STAR method, often used in behavioral questioning,\u00a0stands for \u201cSituation, Task, Action, Results.\u201d It is often used to gain insights about potential employees. Interview\u00a0questions using the\u00a0STAR method\u00a0urge candidates to tell a linear story, focusing on a specific situation and providing details regarding tasks, actions you personally took\/or would take\u00a0and results. Remember, results don\u2019t always have to have positive outcomes.\u00a0 We learn from every experience.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Video Interviewing<\/strong>\u2026.how to prepare?\u00a0 Just because you\u2019re not sitting with someone in person doesn\u2019t mean you\u2019re less prepared.\u00a0 In fact, there\u2019s more to do!\u00a0 Practice recording yourself informally and keep the following in mind:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Prepare yourself ahead of time.\u00a0 Do your research on the company!<\/li>\n<li>Check the technical equipment and test the sound.<\/li>\n<li>De-clutter your space and minimize distractions.<\/li>\n<li>Dress appropriately.\u00a0 I know it\u2019s tempting to be concerned with only what they\u2019ll see\u2026but you\u2019ll feel and potentially perform better if you dress from head to toe.<\/li>\n<li>Look directly at the camera\u2026.as if you\u2019re making eye contact with someone in person.<\/li>\n<li>Pay attention to your body language, facial expressions and overall appearance.<\/li>\n<li>Write down a list of questions for the Interviewer (ahead of time) and have paper\/pen in front of you for notes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>When there\u2019s more than one at the table\u2026<strong>Group Interviews<\/strong>!\u00a0 These can go both ways.\u00a0 You may be part of a group of candidates interviewing for a position or you may be interviewed by a group of employees you\u2019d potentially be working with.\u00a0 Either way, be ready.<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Prepare yourself ahead of time.\u00a0 Do your research on the company!<\/li>\n<li>Arrive early \u2013 15-30 minutes of scheduled interview.<\/li>\n<li>Have a \u201cself-introduction\u201d prepared.<\/li>\n<li>Listen carefully as others are speaking.<\/li>\n<li>Answer first every once in a while, allowing others to do the same.<\/li>\n<li>Be supportive of other candidates responses when appropriate.<\/li>\n<li>Smile, watch your posture and respond positively with non-verbal language.<\/li>\n<li>Ask questions that are appropriate and thoughtful.<\/li>\n<li>Thank your interviewers and shake hands with other candidates\u2026leaving on a positive note.<\/li>\n<li>Send a \u201cthank you\u201d note that is specific to your experience.\u00a0 Who knows, it may get you to round two!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Applying for an IT position?\u00a0 You may face a\u00a0 <a href=\"http:\/\/www.naceweb.org\/career-development\/best-practices\/nace-community-preparing-students-for-technical-interviews\/\"> <strong>Technical Interview<\/strong> <\/a> .\u00a0 Typically, a technical interview consists of two parts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Whiteboarding or coding<\/strong>\u2014In this portion, the candidate is given a problem for which he or she has to whiteboard or code a solution in real-time.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Knowledge-based Q&amp;A<\/strong>\u2014During this part, interviewers ask the candidate questions about different theories and more so they can dig deeper into the candidate\u2019s knowledge.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Check these books out!\u00a0\u00a0<em>Cracking the Coding Interview<\/em>\u00a0by Gayle Laakmann McDowell and\u00a0<em>Programming Interviews Exposed<\/em>\u00a0by John Mongan, Eric Giguere, and Noah Kindler.<\/p>\n<p><strong> <a href=\"\/\/cfcc.edu\/career-development\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/11\/2019\/07\/Interview-Rubric-NACE.pdf\"> Interview-Rubric-NACE <\/a> :\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong>You can do a self-assessment or use this form during \u201cmock interviews\u201d to identify areas you may need to refine.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Congratulations!
