Surf City Center Summer Youth Academy

Each youth academy is an investment in the continued education, personal enrichment, and renewal of each child.

Offered at Cape Fear Community College’s Surf City Center, the Summer Youth Academy will feature a variety of camps for young adults ages 11+ that teach important skills, broaden cultural and creative horizons, develop critical-thinking skills, and enhance technical abilities. This is the first year we are offering family classes…so come on out and take a class with your teenager!

Guitar 101– Rock On

July 12 – Aug. 2, 7 – 9 pm, Mondays, $70

Join Platinum Award-winning guitarist Galen Hunsucker for a fun and interactive course that will teach beginning students the fundaments of playing the guitar in a group setting. Whether you have never played before, or have just a little guitar experience, this course will teach the basics – from the parts and mechanics of the instrument, to correct tuning procedure, to personal playing posture. Students will be introduced to basic chord shapes, beginning guitar theory and single-note melodies. Students will practice at home and be prepared to perform weekly challenges together in a supportive group setting. Bring your own acoustic guitar.

Scent-astic Soaps

June 29, 9 am-1 pm, $45

Discover how to make fantastic, fresh, scented soaps for yourself or a loved one! In this one-day camp, you will use fresh summer fruits, herbs, or citrus peels of your choice to make your own molded glycerin soaps. You will learn to prepare natural ingredients such as fruits/herbs/peels, help in the separation and melting of glycerin (under the watchful supervision of your knowledgeable instructor), and work with molds in order to make your own custom-blended, personalized soap. These soaps are great to use yourself, or give as gifts to friends and family!

Intro to Photography – Frame Me Please

June 8-17, 3 – 5:30 pm, Tue and Thu, $80
July 12-15, 11:30 am – 1:30 pm, $70

Learn how to use your digital single-lens reflex (DSLR) camera to its fullest capability. Students will explore basic and advanced camera features through classroom discussions, demonstrations, and hands-on activities. You will also learn about good photo composition and techniques for photographing a variety of subjects such as landscapes, sports, flash and night photography, and people. Some Photoshop and other post-processing techniques will be discussed and illustrated. Participants should bring their own DSLR camera to class, along with its interchangeable lenses, owner’s manual, memory cards, and other accessories.

Art – Acrylic Paints – Splash of Color

June 7-10, 1 – 3 pm, $80

This course allows students the opportunity to work at their own pace using their choice of subject matter and painting using acrylic paints. This course provides one-on-one instruction and guidance to help students improve their technique and paint with confidence. All art supplies provided.

Spanish I – Crash Culture

June 21-24, 9am-11am, $70

In this program, students will spend one week learning the basics of Spanish conversation, the history of the Spanish language, and explore the heritage and culture of several Spanish-speaking countries. We will focus on 50% conversation. 30% will be spent crashing into a culture where we will focus on different regions, cultural history, interesting facts, and amazing sites from Spanish-speaking countries. And 20% critical culture where students will work on creating cultural comparisons while learning new perspectives about the world around us.

Spanish 2 – Crash Culture

June 28-July 1, 9 – 11 am, $70

Welcome to Spanish II – Heritage or Just History – In this program, students build on the first week’s information and learn more in-depth grammar, vocabulary, and the history of Spanish-speaking countries. We will focus 50% on conversation-based learning, 30% on history, and 20% on vocabulary. As this is a more advanced class we will be learning more about the cultures and their history and the heritage of the natives. The grammar and vocabulary will move even more into the target language with an emphasis on increased proficiency in application topics such as places, food and drink, clothing, and activities.

American Sign Language I

June 8 – July 1, 7 – 8:30 pm, Tue and Thu, $70

American Sign Language is a visual language used to communicate with individuals who are deaf and hard-of-hearing. This course will introduce basic American Sign Language conversation skills and cultural behaviors. American Sign Language for Beginners will also prepare students to have a stronger knowledge and understanding of individuals who are deaf and hard-of-hearing and will be able to develop a stronger bridge with individuals in that community.

American Sign Language II

July 13-Aug. 5 , 7 – 8:30 pm, Tue and Thu, $70

The course is designed to teach an advanced level of American Sign Language. Students will review vocabulary from Beginners Sign Language and add some new vocabulary; build and use phrases and sentences to be able to participate in a basic conversation in ASL, apply ASL grammar to ask and answer basic questions about yourself, learn about the origins of ASL in the United States, create a video introducing yourself in ASL; asking and answering basic questions and describing and implementing ASL grammatical features on a variety of topics including, emotions, placing food and drink orders, locating objects, sports and recreation, Holidays, emergencies, jobs and careers, the weather, family, and colors and animals.
