Incorporating Active Learning Strategies in the College Classroom
January 11 – February 22, 2019
Early enrollment opens December 3; open enrollment begins December 6.
Come explore ways to increase student engagement and participation in your courses. We’ll begin by examining best practices and models of active learning, including case studies, problem-based learning, and collaborative group learning. Along the way, we’ll self-assess the degree to which our current teaching strategies promote active learning. Finally, we’ll stretch beyond our comfort zones and redesign a lesson that is usually taught in a more passive manner. Note: Participants must be currently teaching at least one face-to-face class to complete the activities in this Academy course.

Reaching Students with Video (Technology Bootcamp Series)
January 11 – February 15, 2019
Early enrollment opens December 3; open enrollment begins December 6.
Clearly, today’s students pay attention to video far more than print or even graphics. In this course you’ll get comfortable with the technical issues surrounding videos, including finding, making, and sharing them, and ways to make them a regular part of your teaching toolkit. You will learn to 1) find and use videos relevant to your courses, 2) convert existing presentations to video, and 3) record and embellish your own videos, such as weekly assignments, demonstrations, short lectures, or just “welcome to the class!” It’s time to enhance your own classroom lessons and online instruction with video! Note: This course requires a significant commitment of time each week, an eagerness to interact with colleagues, and a reliable multimedia computer with high speed Internet.

Planning and Producing Educational Video (Technology Bootcamp Series)
March 15 – April 19, 2019
Early enrollment opens February 22; open enrollment begins February 25.
Educational videos effectively convey much more information to a more diverse audience of learners than a printed handout, but require planning, execution, polish, and posting to a reliable platform—far more than simply recording a video on a smartphone and posting it to social media. In this second video bootcamp, teachers will take a giant step toward creating and delivering video that will further the educational mission in their subject area. Working in a supportive group atmosphere, participants will practice the techniques of planning, producing, and sharing video that is designed to quickly and effectively communicate a message. Note: Video production is time-consuming and computer intensive. Participants will need a modern multimedia computer with at least 8 GB of memory.

Curriculum Development for Integrated Instruction
March 14 – April 26, 2019; final projects due May 1
Early enrollment opens February 22; open enrollment begins February 25.
This course offers a guided, collaborative curriculum design experience. Participants will explore models and methods for integrating career, technical and academic concepts in their courses. Following a step-wise process with provided templates, participants will create an integrated lesson that incorporates a real world scenario, contextual learning, employability skills development, and authentic assessment. Colleagues will provide each other with weekly peer reviews and feedback through the course discussion board. Come explore this model for maximizing student interest and learning through integrated lesson design.
Special Note: Participants must be currently teaching at least one face-to-face class to complete the activities in this Academy course.
