Quick Guide – Creating Accessible Material

Any course material presented in class or online should be accessible to all students, regardless of whether or not a student with a disability is present.

The Online Learning Department has worked to develop guidance in creating accessible material. Please become familiar with these development techniques and double-check that all course material is accessible.

Create Accessible Content Help Guide

Briefly, the following is a list to consider:

  • Ensure that all electronic documents are accessible to screen reading software
  • Ensure that all printed and electronic documents are accessible to students with color blindness
  • Ensure that all videos played in class and online are accurately captioned
  • Ensure that all hyperlinks and images have descriptive alt text
  • Ensure that all printed material is written in a font that is large and clear enough for a person with low vision

To reiterate, course material must be made accessible before classes begin. It is not appropriate to wait until a student with a disability enrolls in a class to create accessible material.
