All faculty teaching UGETC courses are invited to submit a proposal to teach in the Honors Program at CFCC. Honors instructors will have the opportunity to engage motivated students within a smaller class setting, the freedom to creatively weave individual areas of interest into the fabric of the class, and the option to include off-campus field trips as part of the course architecture.<\/p>\n
The goal of honors teaching is not to simply add more work for students; rather, instructors should strive to create immersive, experience-based<\/strong> classes that prioritize active learning. Moreover, complexity, cognitive engagement, and depth of the learning activity should be at the heart of each class. <\/p>\n The National Collegiate Honors Council (NCHC) is a group that provides encouragement and support to honors programs and honors colleges all across the nation. They have this to say about honors teaching:<\/p>\n Honors education is characterized by in-class and extracurricular activities that are measurably broader, deeper, or more complex than comparable learning experiences typically found at institutions of higher education. Honors experiences include a distinctive learner-directed environment and philosophy, provide opportunities that are appropriately tailored to fit the institution\u2019s culture and mission, and frequently occur within a close community of students and faculty.<\/p>\n Interested faculty are asked to craft a 250-word proposal<\/strong> describing the overall theme, course architecture (assignments, activities, teaching materials, etc.), intended outcomes for students, and a brief statement describing how the course meets honors-level standards. <\/p>\n Upon completion of your proposal, please have your department chair sign off on it, then submit it to Dr. Hrebik for review (contact information below). <\/p>\n Dr. John Ryan Hrebik<\/strong> All faculty teaching UGETC courses are invited to submit a proposal to teach in the Honors Program at CFCC.
